Overview:

The Finishes Technician SR serves as a coordinator for projects, directs teams as assigned by Foreman and performs advanced floor preparation and application techniques to maintain, repair, and finish USU facilities.  Accomplishes this by applying journeyman skills in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge, the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests.

Responsibilities:

Prepares labor and materials estimates for repair and renovation projects, working with customers to select the most appropriate materials to meet the needs of the customer.

Assists in monitoring, ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment.

Coordinates projects and schedules work to ensure timely completion and quality standards, as needed.

Performs customer service duties by checking in and following up with customers and ensuring that their needs are met.

Leads, guides, and trains other technicians in applicable procedures and techniques.

Coordinates and participates in various meetings and committees to enhance and develop the Facilities department and resources.

Prepares surfaces before painting by: removing nails, washing, scraping, sanding, puttying, patching, mudding and taping, etc.

Repairs chips or scrapes on walls, ceilings, and furniture and completes texturing tasks.

Applies paint to walls, equipment, buildings, and other structural surfaces by using brushes, rollers, sprayers and related equipment.

Maintains records of paint colors for assigned buildings.

Operates equipment such as spray equipment, scaffolding, and motorized lifts.

Hangs wall paper and applies other decorative finish elements to walls and other surfaces.

Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.

Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Mixes, blends and matches paints, varnishes, and lacquers to proper color and consistency, by hand or using the computer.

Performs stucco and other outdoor surfaces and specialty repairs or preforms unique artistic painting such as faux painting.

Matches stains to woodwork such as baseboards, trim and cabinets.

Performs athletic field and roadway stripping using specialized equipment or performs repairs on paint sprayers and other specialized equipment beyond normal maintenance.

Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assists work in the other areas of the Finishes Shop such as; floor covering, upholstery, and signage.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of 6 years directly related work experience in flooring trade.

Demonstrates ability to effectively manage project teams, accomplishing desired results.

Mentor other employees. 

Demonstrates willingness to obtain additional technical training. 

Understands and shows appreciation for the mission of the institution as reflected by a strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and through professional relations with internal and external customers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.

Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.

Ability to work without supervision.

Skill in evaluating jobs and determining the appropriate action to take and what materials to use.

Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings and designs.

Knowledge of repair the process for all walls and surfaces.

Skill in the selection and application of paint and associated products.

Skill in mixing and matching paint, lacquer, and stain.

Comprehensive knowledge of all types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.

Comprehensive knowledge of staining, varnishing, and lacquering techniques.

Technical problem solving skills within area of specialty.

Knowledge of other crafts and when to use them.

Mathematical computation skills.

Skill in the use of personal computers and applicable software.

Exceptional customer service skills.

Records maintenance skills.

Ability to accurately estimate projects and purchase materials.
