The Siryaporn lab investigates host-microbe interactions at the intersection of molecular biology and biological physics. The lab assistant will support research in this area by performing tasks related to experimental research centered around data collection, data analysis, and drafting and revision of figures and text that will be used in manuscripts and grant proposals. The assistant is expected to have completed upper-division university-level courses in biology, chemistry, and physics, and be proficient in experimental methods in biological physics and molecular biology. The position may involve training or partial supervision of students who are new to research and involves few managerial tasks. There is no involvement of supervision of other laboratory assistants.

The Dept of Physics & Astronomy is one of the largest academic departments in the School of Physical Sciences at UCI, with 53 faculty, 76 non-senate academics, 15 career staff and 181 graduate students. Physics lies at the forefront of our understanding of nature. It includes the study of the universe on the largest scales – astronomy and cosmology, and on the smallest – the physics of quarks and leptons. In addition, physics provides the background for high technology; lasers, nuclear power, semiconductors, and medical imaging all have their roots in physics. At the UCI Department of Physics & Astronomy, world-renowned physicists study exciting topics like extrasolar planets, quantum mechanics, gravitation, the big bang, black holes, magnetism, and superconductivity.

Responsibilities:

This position is for a lab assistant with a skillset in biological physics and molecular biology. The lab assistant is expected to perform experimental research tasks including developing and executing biophysical benchwork experiments, collecting and analyzing data using Python and Matlab, constructing figures using R, drafting text and figures that summarize the findings that will be used in manuscripts or proposals. Specific techniques that the assistant may carry out under supervision of the principal investigator include hydrogel preparation, timelapse fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, microfluidic device preparation, deflectometry time-lapse imaging, spheroplast preparation, cloning, PCR, strain construction, bacterial culturing, genetic screens, and mass spectrometry. The lab assistant will perform experimental tasks that assist with ongoing projects in the lab and with collaborators and will provide introductory training for students who are new to experimental biological physics research.

Required:

Completion of university-level courses in biology, chemistry, and physics

Proficiency in experimental techniques in biological physics and molecular biology.

Proficiency with particle image analysis using Matlab or Python and figure creation using R.

Proficiency in diffraction-limited high resolution fluorescence microscopy

Proficiency in molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis, cloning, PCR, and creation of genetic knockouts.

Assembly of publication-quality figures using Adobe Illustrator.
