The Role – Special Needs Teacher

A supportive and well-resourced SEN school in Southwark is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Needs Teacher to join their team on a permanent basis from September 2026. In this role, you will be responsible for teaching pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and associated complex learning needs across small, structured classes. Lessons will need to be highly differentiated, engaging, and tailored to individual learning profiles, with a strong focus on communication, independence, and emotional development.

You will be supported in the classroom by 2–3 Teaching Assistants, ensuring a collaborative and well-structured approach to learning and behaviour support. The role will also involve using communication strategies such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and Makaton, along with visual supports and sensory-based approaches to help pupils access learning effectively.

The successful Special Needs Teacher will work closely with support staff, therapists, and senior leaders to monitor progress, implement personalised learning plans, and create a calm, consistent, and nurturing classroom environment where pupils can thrive both academically and personally. This position would suit a patient, resilient, and passionate teacher who has strong behaviour management skills and a genuine commitment to supporting pupils with additional needs. Both experienced teachers and ECTs with a strong interest in SEN are encouraged to apply.

The School – Special Needs Teacher

This is a welcoming and well-established SEN school in Southwark that caters for pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and a range of additional learning needs. The school provides a highly structured and supportive environment designed to meet the academic, social, emotional, and communication needs of its pupils.

Rated “Good” by Ofsted, the school is recognised for its strong leadership, inclusive ethos, and commitment to personalised learning pathways that support pupils in developing essential life skills alongside academic progress.

The school places a strong emphasis on communication, independence, and emotional regulation, using approaches such as PECS, Makaton, visual timetables, and sensory strategies to ensure all learners can access education successfully.

Staff benefit from a collaborative team culture where teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, and leadership work closely together to support pupil outcomes. The school also offers excellent ongoing training and professional development opportunities, with clear pathways for career progression within specialist education.
