Overview:

We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Designer Intern in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the development of mechanical solutions by providing CAD modeling and drafting support, documentation, testing, and other technical support within a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Support the completion of basic mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products

Apply knowledge of math, science and physics, strong spatial skills, and a pragmatic approach to partner with experienced engineers & mechanical designers in taking product concepts to mass production

Model basic parts/components including injection molded plastic, die cast aluminum and zinc, sheet metal, CNC machined, and screw machine fabricated parts, compression molded rubber, extrusions, display components, flex circuits, touch panels, speaker enclosures, mounting systems, etc.

Assist with sourcing of components such as electrical connectors, speakers, microphones, LCD’s, backlights, keypads, switches, electric motors, screw machined parts, rotary controls, batteries, and antennas

Coordinate basic test plans and assist in executing product testing to verify compliance with design requirements

Interface with Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and other departments for discussion of basic designs

Maintain configuration control of documentation for products in production and interface with available drafting and document control resources

Be able to take feedback from Mechanical Engineers and update mechanical designs per recommendations and thoroughly document work in an organized manner

Able to effectively present information through reports, meetings, and other means of communications

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications

Completed coursework toward an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Aided Drafting & Design, or a related field

Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)

Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)

CAD knowledge and/or experience

Relevant mechanical design experience

Demonstrated strengths in math, science, physics, and practical application coursework

Problem solving skills

PC/Windows environment experience

Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
