Overview:

The Nurse Practitioner-Adult Psychiatric Mental Health will provide direct clinical care including assessment, medication management and medication administration, Must possess ability to work autonomously, collaborating with physician, peers and others in the health care community. Successful candidate should have experience working with psychiatric clients as well as with co-occurring substance disorders.

Responsibilities:

Essentials Job Duties

Must provide direct clinical care including assessment, medical management and medication administration. Provides psychiatric evaluations to clients. Provides treatment planning recommendations. Provides psychiatric emergency crisis management and consultation. Participates in clinical and staff development. Ensure documentation meets regulatory and accrediting standards. Provides assistance with quality improvement and other hospital initiatives. The Nurse Practitioner is also responsible for the management of care for a specified group of patients in accordance with mutually agreed upon protocols and within the policies and procedures established by the Department of Behavioral Health, The American Nurse's Association and the Hospital. 

Patient Care Management and Documentation

Obtains and documents subjective history (interval and comprehensive)

Conducts regular mental status exam, documenting pertinent positive and negative findings

Identifies a diagnostic impression and/or formulates a differential based on the subjective and objective data obtained

Writes prescription(s) according to New York State and federal law

Formulates a goal-directed plan that includes health maintenance, anticipatory guidance and appropriate medical and nursing interventions according to established protocols/practice agreement

Assesses and documents patient response to treatment and interventions

Provides and documents health teaching that is oriented to the appropriate problem and/or developmentally age-appropriate health maintenance or anticipatory guidance issues

Consults and/or refers as per collaborative agreements/protocols. Documents same as well as documents follow-up

Quality Assurance

Conducts review of patient records in collaboration with peers and physician colleagues to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided

Engages in ongoing peer review and quality review activities, competency evaluations and Medical Board reviews

Patient Safety

Administers care in accordance with safety, environmental and infectious control principles and regulations identified by the institution and legislative bodies

Practices in accordance with their scope of practice as delineated by collaborative agreement, practice protocols and delineation of privileges to include ordering and/or administering medication

Patient Rights

Demonstrates an awareness and knowledge of patient's rights and responsibilities while receiving care within the institution

Demonstrates knowledge of the referral mechanism when a patient believes these rights have been violated

Demonstrates knowledge of the hospital's policy governing the application of supportive devices to a patient

Protects confidentiality and privacy

Education

Serves as a resource person and participates in staff developmental programs

Provides patient education and counseling on health status and treatment plan

Serves as clinical preceptor for students from selected programs

Coordination/Collaboration

Collaborates on clinical problems with nursing service personnel, medical staff or other health care providers

Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team to determine and achieve goals of patients and families

Collaborates with administration and professional staff of the hospital in the establishment and implementation of community services

Professional Practice

Participates in the department staff meetings and committees as required and appropriate

Serves as a professional role model for advanced practice for staff, the interdisciplinary team and students

Qualifications:

Position Requirements:

Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry.

Current New York State license.

The Nurse Practitioner will be credentialed as Allied Health Professional of One Brooklyn Health medical staff.

 Language:

Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing

Physical Demands:

Involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing and bending.

May include some repetitive motions.
