Job Summary:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Surgical Nurse Educator will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and resources that promote nursing excellence and enhance patient care in surgical settings. 

Job Duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum Development: Design, develop, and update educational programs tailored to the unique needs of surgical nursing staff and students, including orientation programs, continuing education courses, and specialized workshops.

Instruction and Training: Deliver engaging and effective instructional sessions using various teaching methodologies, including lectures, hands-on demonstrations, simulations, and group discussions.

Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to nursing staff and students, fostering a positive learning environment and promoting professional growth and development.

Assessments and Evaluations: Develop assessment tools to evaluate the knowledge, skills, and competencies of nursing personnel, and provide constructive feedback for improvement.

Collaboration: Work closely with surgical teams, nursing management, and other healthcare professionals to identify educational needs and develop targeted programs that address current practices, protocols, and technologies.

Research and Best Practices: Stay current with the latest advancements in surgical nursing and education, and integrate evidence-based practices into educational programs and staff training.

Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to surgical nursing education, patient safety, and outcomes, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Documentation: Maintain accurate records of training and evaluation outcomes, and report on program effectiveness to nursing leadership.

Data Analysis for Surgical Services:  Gather data from various sources such as electronic health records (EHRs) and surgical logs to identify areas for improving surgical outcomes, analyze expenses and find opportunities to reduce cost, and streamline surgical workflows and resource allocation.

Patient Care:  Plans and delivers professional nursing care to patients as needed in accordance with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and Cherokee Nation Health Services’ mission, vision, and values.

Other duties as assigned.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

Performs work under minimal supervision.

Handles complex issues and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.

Possesses comprehensive knowledge of subject matter.

Provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group.

May act as lead or first-level supervisor.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) or Education preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience in surgical nursing, with at least two (2) in an educational or mentoring role.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a license as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) or possess a multistate RN license accepted by the OBN, No substitutions. Must maintain license throughout employment.

Advanced Cardiac Lift Support (ACLS); must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment.

National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS); must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment.

COMPETENCIES

Strong organizational, communication, and presentation skills 

Ability to assess educational needs and develop curricula 

Proficiency in the use of technology for educational purposes.       

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

May be required to meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

A driver’s license may be required to work in some departments.  If so, the applicant/employee must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
