Job Summary:

Performs functions necessary to compile, analyze, interpret, report and maintain the integrity of financial information in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Federal regulations, Tribal legislation, and Financial Resources policies and procedures.

Job Duties:

Prepares internal/external reports. Answers internal and external inquiries. Provides information required for programmatic and annual audits. Reviews budgets for assigned programs. Collects, verifies, and ascertains the validity of documents for compliance with both federal laws and Cherokee Nation policies used in processes. Establishes and maintains a communicative relationship with appropriate program personnel. Recommends procedures to ensure compliance with funding guidelines or requirements. Gains thorough knowledge of accounting processes and makes suggestions for improvements when appropriate. Maintains data integrity for assigned aspects of the financial system. Monitors budget activity for assigned programs. Reviews and verifies the accuracy of information. Performs monthly closing of assigned programs for each accounting period. Plans duties in accordance with set deadline requirements. Prepares or assists in preparing financial statements, financial reports, and financial analysis. Maintains or assists in maintaining general and subsidiary ledgers, and supporting schedules for assigned programs. Prepares reconciliations of financial information to the general ledger. Provides technical assistance and support to program personnel to ensure operating efficiency. Reviews accounting information to ensure the accuracy of information, calculations, and makes correcting entries. Validates information on the financial system to ensure that it is accurate and up-to-date. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Accountant I

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

Prefer Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

An additional one (1) year of experience required.

Accountant II

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

Prefer Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

An additional three (3) years of experience is required.

Accountant III

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

Prefer Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

An additional five (5) years of experience in the Accounting field, with preference to governmental accounting experience.

COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should have knowledge of Accounting, Database, Internet, Spreadsheet and Word Processing software, and Payroll systems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must possess good written, communication, organization, and time management skills in order to meet deadline requirements. Must also have the analytical skills to propose journal entries and monitor results.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA Candidate a plus.

Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS    

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT   

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
