Overview:

Under the direction of a ranking clinician and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Behavioral Health Associate supports the psychosocial and behavioral needs of residents. The BHA is expected to perform crisis intervention/prevention and de-escalation techniques, implement behavioral care plans, and provide 1:1 therapeutic observations when needed. The BHA also aids in 1:1 and group activities in effort to enhance overall wellbeing and to minimize or decrease potential behaviors as part of their behavioral care plan.

Responsibilities:

Utilizes crisis and/or de-escalation intervention practices, when necessary and appropriate, with clients whose behavior cannot be otherwise supported without such interventions.

Provides 1:1 therapeutic observation or monitoring when needed, using therapeutic techniques to assist resident with behavior modification.

Working with residents to help them develop skills to assist in increasing their independence.

Identifies resident characteristics, needs, and possible variables that may trigger agitated or distressed behaviors and communicates assessment with the interdisciplinary team.

Conducts rounds/visits, as needed, to assess resident’s current psychological condition, reporting any findings to the team and devising and executing a plan of care.

Demonstrates, explains, and provides stress reduction and adaptive coping techniques in consideration of developmental, emotional, situational, cultural, and behavioral factors.

Assists residents in crisis situations with de-escalation techniques, to ensure their safety.

Facilitates developmentally-appropriate group and individual activities to help support resident’s psychosocial needs.

Collaborates with other Pediatric/Young Adult staff to plan and execute outings or community inclusion (libraries, museums, cultural events, etc.), and special events (parties, celebrations, etc.) that provide opportunities for psychosocial enrichment and overall developmental enhancement as well as offer behavioral support on such outings.

Supervises and provides support to families and residents during visits.

Works closely with the interdisciplinary team to foster a therapeutic environment and participates in resident’s treatment planning, morning rounds, weekly case conferences, and staff meetings.

Assists with the Volunteer Program when needed.

Develops trusting and therapeutic relationships with residents and utilizes a person and family-centered care model.

Communicates support, care, and concerns of resident and family/loved one.

Values individuality and uniqueness of each person and conveys an accepting and humanistic approach.

Must be insightful and aware of own behavior and how one’s own behavior may affect others.

Must be able to demonstrate consistent emotional control and an even temperament in stressful situations.

Develops collaborative relationships with other team members.

Provides behavioral or psychosocial support in resident care areas, such as shower or resident rooms, while resident is receiving care.

Assists with transferring a resident when needed.

Selects a safe, developmentally appropriate supply of toys and equipment to address the needs and goals of the assigned area and population. Assists departmental staff members in the effective purchase, storage, maintenance, and sanitizing of materials utilized in programming.

Promotes a clean, safe, and functional space for use by residents and families. Identifies environmental safety hazards and corresponding preventive/protective measures.

Must learn and demonstrate proficiency in MDS and current EMR.

Maintains documentation, including activity participation logs, progress reports, behavioral data, and care plans.

Adheres to all policies and procedures relevant to performing job duties, particularly those related to Infection Control.

Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, or Social Services, preferred.

De-escalation and Resolution Conflict Training preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to work in surroundings with degree of dust, noise, etc. without undue discomfort.

Ability to hear, talk, walk, stand, bend and stretch

Ability to read, write and interpret documents

Ability to sit for long periods of time at desk to perform job functions

Ability to stand for long periods of time at required  patient bedside and/or procedural areas

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and/or co-workers

May be required to handle reasonably heavy weights across distances

May be required to operate and/or clean equipment

May be required to handle/ assist in lifting patients onto/out of exam beds/procedure stations

Other: Knowledge of all codes and demonstrate understanding

Experience:

Minimum two (2) years working in a mental health or health-care setting preferred

Experience in working with residents with behavioral challenges and needs preferred

Training in working with special needs and pediatric/medically fragile young adult populations

Special Note:

As required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Hospital Conditions for Participation-Patient Rights (42 CFR Part 484), before applying restraints, implementing seclusion, performing associated monitoring of the restrained or secluded individual, or providing care for such individual, staff must be trained and able to demonstrate competency in the performance of these actions.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but potential for exposure.
