Summary:

The Senior Accountant will be primarily responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting (internal and external), ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).  They will also be responsible for accounting for the credit union’s more complex transactions. They will serve a key role to ensure the month-end closing process is efficient, timely and accurate.  The Senior Accountant will assist team members with the research and resolution of issues impacting members and/or the financial records of the credit union and be expected to mentor and train junior team members.  They will also serve as a liaison to external auditors and regulatory agencies. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Support the timely close of monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting periods.

Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for the more complex asset and liability accounts of the credit union. Researching and clearing reconciling items in a timely manner.

Preparation of and first line review of monthly financial statements.

Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers.

Serve as a liaison between Finance and Accounting, primarily in the review and documentation of monthly actual to actual variances and resolution of posting errors.

Lead daily reconciliation of sub-ledgers (loan and deposit system, accounts payable and credit/debit card) to the general ledger

Supports the quarterly call report (5300) preparation, prepares supporting documentation and serves as the first line review of the quarterly filing.

Preparation of annual audited financial statements to include balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows and member’s equity as well as supporting footnotes.

Serve as initial liaison to support requests from annual financial statement auditors and regulatory examiners.

Serve as primary backup for loan and investment accounting that includes recording of loan originations, borrower activity, loan securitizations in the secondary market, gains/losses on loan sales, interest accruals, mortgage servicing rights, deferred servicing release premiums, investment purchases, sales and maturities, market valuation of the investment portfolio, and monthly amortization of deferred origination costs associated with mortgage originations. 

Support the accounting operations team as needed, providing coverage for both planned and unplanned staff absences.

Review and support best practices for payroll, accounts payable, balance sheet reconciliations, check twenty-one, fixed assets, and sales and use tax.

Review annual 1099 process.

Serve as liaison for preparation of annual tax returns including, but not limited to 990, Int-4 and Sales and Use Tax.

Identifies key internal controls, ensures adherence to the controls and develops action plans to address any gaps.

Ensure that accounting procedures are consistent with management and board policies documentation for processes and procedures is maintained.

Continually review methodologies and processes to improve and enhance results within the accounting department.

Promote honest and open communication throughout the credit union.

Demonstrate behaviors that are consistent with the credit union’s values, philosophies, and leadership characteristics.

Work with other credit union departments to ensure that processes and workflows are providing the best possible service to credit union members.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with an emphasis in accounting, or equivalent experience from an accredited four-year college or university.

Five plus years of related accounting experience demonstrating increasing responsibility.

Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).

Public accounting and financial services experience a plus.

Knowledge of Workday Finance and Accounting software platform a plus.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Well-rounded knowledge of US GAAP, accounting policies and procedures and best practices in operational accounting processes

Initiative-taking and self-directed.

Advanced organizational and planning skills, strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Ability to build strong relationships throughout the credit union.

Demonstrated independent and complex critical thinking skills with the ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.

Ability to think analytically and logically.

Ability to interact with individuals diplomatically.

Advanced personal computer, calculator, spreadsheet, and word processing skills.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to resolve interpersonal conflict and miscommunications.

Exercises a high discretion, sensitivity, tact, and respect for confidentiality always.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, and tasks of others simultaneously.
