Overview:

As a direct liaison between the patient and faculty member, as well as other departmental staff, the Medical Assistant will guide patients through the care plan outlined by the faculty member. Those care plans primarily involve surgical interventions and require guiding the patient through the experience from beginning to end. This position will play a key role in ensuring overall patient satisfaction and will be uniquely positioned to support faculty goals of maximizing clinical time and effort.

Responsibilities:

Develop a knowledge and expertise in caring for surgery patients of their assigned Divisions. This role will assist the faculty member in caring for and educating the patient’s pre and postoperatively during treatment acting as a primary point of contact for the Department.

Work closely with the receptionist and the administrative assistant/surgical scheduler of the assigned faculty member  to create surgical schedules. Be mindful of surgeons and patients preferences and will coordinate with all parties in a professional and courteous manner.

Work with patients and other physicians to schedule consultations, pre-surgical testing, answering/triaging patient phone calls and post-operative scheduling.  

Discuss all estimated quotes – including costs related to surgeon, anesthesia and facility fees as appropriate.

 Have the ability to discuss common concerns or questions that patients contemplating surgery may have and will assist in providing answers through collaboration with faculty member, resident physicians, and clinical supervisor as needed.

Must be detail oriented and organized in order to help ensure that all patients’ information, pre-operative scheduling/clearances and surgical scheduling is completed and maintained in a timely fashion. Have the ability to multi-task calls from current and prospective patients and family members, other physician offices, surgical scheduling offices and insurance companies.

Prepare for the clinical sessions of their faculty members by ensuring all appropriate medical records, or other applicable clinical information is received and entered into a patients chart prior to physician review.

Assist the physician during clinics. Specific duties during clinic may include – rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, documenting portions of the patient’s medical history, creating a clinical summary, ordering tests and consultations with other physicians.

After clinical sessions, the Medical Assistant will be tasked with ensuring all required orders placed by the faculty member are addressed in a timely manner and update patients as to the status of those orders. This includes referrals to other physician offices, scheduling imaging as requested, and all other assigned tasks that fall into the patients care plan.

The Medical Assistant must maintain a professional and courteous demeanor and helpful attitude while interacting with all patients and physicians offices in order to provide excellent service to all those involved with the practice.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Completion of a program of instruction for Medical Assistants as well as certification as a Medical Assistant such an RMA or CMA is required, or ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.

Completion of BLS training and recertification every 2 years

Prior experience in a surgical setting strongly preferred.
