Teaching Assistant - Specialist ASD Unit
A highly regarded primary school in Tower Hamlets is looking to appoint a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join its specialist Autism provision from September 2026.
This rewarding Teaching Assistant role will be based within the school's ASD Unit, supporting a small group of pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and associated communication and sensory needs. Class sizes are deliberately small, allowing staff to provide highly personalised support in a structured and nurturing environment.
Working alongside a specialist teacher and experienced SEN team, the successful Teaching Assistant will help pupils develop their communication, independence, emotional regulation and readiness for learning, while also supporting integration into mainstream classes where appropriate.
The Role
As a Teaching Assistant, you will:
Support pupils within the specialist ASD Unit throughout the school day
Deliver one-to-one and small-group learning activities tailored to EHCP outcomes
Implement visual timetables, sensory strategies and structured routines
Encourage communication, social interaction and independence
Support pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies
Work closely with teachers, therapists and the SENCO to review pupil progress
The Ideal Candidate
The school is looking for a Teaching Assistant who:
Has experience supporting children with Autism in a school or specialist setting
Understands the importance of consistency, routine and structured learning
Is calm, patient and resilient when supporting pupils with complex needs
Can build positive relationships with pupils, families and colleagues
Is passionate about inclusive education and SENDExperience with PECS, Makaton, Attention Autism or sensory integration approaches would be highly desirable, although training will be provided.
