Teaching Personnel is recruiting a full-time Trainee Teaching Assistant to join a large and successful secondary school in Newport from September 2026.

This opportunity would be ideal for a graduate, aspiring teacher, sports coach, care worker, youth worker, support worker or volunteer who is passionate about supporting children and young people.

Previous school-based experience is not essential. Full training and ongoing support will be provided.

What does a Trainee Teaching Assistant do?

As a Trainee Teaching Assistant, you will provide in-class support to pupils with a range of Additional Learning Needs.

Your responsibilities may include:

Supporting pupils to remain engaged during lessons

Accompanying assigned pupils to different classes

Providing one-to-one or small-group support

Helping pupils understand and complete their work

Supporting the wider class and teaching staff

Encouraging pupils to build confidence and independence

Helping to create a positive and inclusive learning environment

The pupils you support may have needs including Autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, Tourette’s syndrome and social, emotional or behavioural needs.

Previous experience supporting individuals with Additional Learning Needs is desirable but not essential. Applications are welcomed from candidates with transferable skills and a genuine willingness to learn.

Graduates with a degree in a core subject such as English, Maths or Science may also have opportunities to deliver one-to-one interventions or small-group tutoring sessions.

The school also encourages staff to get involved in extracurricular activities. Applicants with interests or skills in sport, music, art, drama or computer coding would be encouraged to share these with pupils.

Training and support

All Trainee Teaching Assistants will complete Level 2 Child Safeguarding training before beginning work in school.
