MIG Welder / Fabricator – Defence Manufacturing
Stockport | £19.97 per hour | Permanent
A long-established defence manufacturer in Stockport is recruiting experienced MIG Welders and Fabricators to support secured military vehicle and equipment programmes. You'll be producing armoured assemblies and specialist military equipment to exacting standards, with long-term stability backed by multi-year defence contracts.
What you'll be doing:
MIG welding on armour plate, armoured steel, and aluminium components to military standards and tight tolerances
Manufacturing defence equipment using jigs and fixtures, working to engineering drawings and work instructions
Tack welding using MIG/MAG processes
Carrying out visual inspection and NDT checks to confirm conformity to specification
Understanding materials behaviour, residual stress, and weld quality on complex assemblies
Using hand tools and appropriate measuring instruments
Completing work records accurately on SAP or similar MRP systems
Identifying hazards before starting work and complying with EHS policies throughout
Completing European welder approval tests on a regular basis
What you need:
At least 12 months' MIG welding and/or fabrication experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
Experience with MIG as a primary process (MAG and TIG desirable)
Knowledge of HSLA steels and welding to BS EN ISO 5817 quality standards
Understanding of welding and fabrication of complex assemblies including materials behaviour, HICC, and residual stress
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, WPS, NDT methods, and welding specifications
Familiarity with quality standards such as DIN 2303, BS EN 1090-1, ISO 3834, or ISO 9001
NVQ Level 3 in Welding or equivalent (desirable)
Flexibility to support occasional night shifts when operationally required (enhanced rates apply)
