You will work across both Legacy and modern components, using Visual Basic and Pervasive SQL to maintain stability and continuity, and applying C# and .NET skills to evolve the product. Operating within a product engineering environment, you will help ensure the payroll platform remains reliable, scalable, and aligned with customer needs.
Responsibilities
- Support the ongoing development and enhancement of the payroll application, ensuring features remain robust and aligned with business requirements.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance existing VB6 and VB-based codebases to ensure stability and performance.
- Design, develop, and implement new functionality using C# to support the gradual modernisation of the application.
- Work with and manage data stored within Pervasive SQL databases, including querying, updates, and performance optimisation.
- Analyse the existing system architecture and propose improvements to performance, stability, and maintainability.
- Support the integration of Legacy VB6 components with newer application layers developed in C# and .NET where required.
- Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and QA teams to deliver enhancements that are aligned with product roadmaps.
- Participate in defect resolution activities, including root cause analysis and production support, to minimise system downtime.
- Contribute to technical documentation, ensuring that changes and designs are clearly recorded for future reference and knowledge transfer.
- Participate in code reviews to uphold coding standards, improve code quality, and share best practices across the team.
- Ensure adherence to engineering standards, coding best practices, and secure development principles throughout the development life cycle.
- Support testing activities, including functional validation and regression testing of changes within development and release cycles.
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives focused on optimising the Legacy system and defining pathways for modernisation.
- Strong experience in C# development, with the ability to design and implement new functionality in a complex application environment.
- Hands-on experience with Visual Basic, including VB6, for maintaining and enhancing Legacy applications.
- Practical experience working with Pervasive SQL databases, including querying, data updates, and performance tuning.
- Proficiency in .NET technologies to support modern application development and integration with Legacy components.
- Proven ability to analyse existing system architectures and recommend improvements to performance, stability, and maintainability.
- experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product management, engineering, and QA.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with experience in defect resolution and root cause analysis.
- Ability to follow established engineering standards, coding best practices, and secure development principles.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for contributing to documentation, knowledge sharing, and effective teamwork.
- Background in working with SaaS-based products, particularly in complex business or payroll domains.
- experience with ERP systems and understanding of how payroll functionality integrates within broader enterprise solutions.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and working within Agile delivery teams.
- Formal qualification or strong professional experience in VB or C# (VB or C# preferred).
- experience contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and Legacy system modernisation programmes.
You will join a product-focused engineering environment that embraces modern SaaS and ERP practices and encourages continuous improvement. The team works in an Agile way, offering opportunities to collaborate closely with product, engineering, and QA professionals while contributing to meaningful enhancements in a widely used payroll platform. You will have the chance to shape the modernisation of a critical Legacy system, broaden your technical expertise across both VB6 and C#, and work in a culture that values quality, secure development, and long-term product sustainability.
Work Environment
You will work within a structured product engineering environment that follows Agile methodologies and modern software development practices. The technology stack spans Legacy VB6 and VB codebases, Pervasive SQL databases, and modern C# and .NET components, providing exposure to both maintenance and greenfield-style development. Collaboration with product, engineering, and QA teams is central to the role, with regular involvement in testing, release cycles, and continuous improvement initiatives. The environment promotes adherence to engineering standards, secure development principles, and thorough documentation, ensuring a professional and well-organised development setting.
