Mainframe Developer - OpenVMS, DCL Scripts - Manufacturing Systems

+ Permanent or contract role

+ Paying up to £70k per annum

+ Hybrid working from Northampton

Key Skills:

+ OpenVMS Development via DCL or similar experience

+ Working in a Manufacturing environment

We are seeking an experienced OpenVMS Developer to take ownership of a critical Manufacturing Execution System environment within a high-tech manufacturing operation. This is a key role focused on supporting, optimising, and evolving MES capabilities to drive production efficiency, system reliability, and compliance.

The successful candidate will act as the technical lead and subject matter expert for the MES platform, working closely with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and IT teams to support business-critical operations and future system upgrades.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, configure, maintain, and optimise the MES environment
  • Ensure high system availability and performance across manufacturing operations
  • Support integration with ERP, PLC, and other enterprise systems
  • Lead troubleshooting, enhancements, and continuous improvement activities
  • Analyse production workflows and implement MES improvements
  • Develop SOPs, documentation, and best practices
  • Deliver user training and ongoing technical support
  • Ensure compliance with industry and audit standards
  • Lead future MES upgrade or replacement initiatives
  • Collaborate with external vendors and technical partners

Experience Required

  • Strong experience managing and configuring MES platforms such as PROMIS, Camstar, Ops Center, or similar
  • Experience within manufacturing or semiconductor environments
  • Knowledge of manufacturing workflows and systems integration
  • Scripting and DCL programming experience
  • Experience supporting enterprise production systems in a regulated environment
  • Knowledge of OpenVMS and PROMIS advantageous
  • Familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux desirable

Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and technical projects effectively
