Quantity Surveyor

Location: Hertfordshire

The Role

The Senior Quantity Surveyor will oversee the full commercial management of 3-4 projects simultaneously, ensuring strong financial control, contractual compliance, and successful project delivery.

Working closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors, and directors, you will manage all commercial aspects from procurement through to final account while supporting the development of junior commercial staff.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Management

Full commercial responsibility for multiple civil engineering and groundworks projects
Managing cost control, forecasting, and financial reporting
Preparing and submitting applications for payment
Producing and maintaining CVRs and cost forecasts
Managing change control, variations, and commercial risk
Monitoring project performance and profitability

Procurement & Supply Chain Management

Procuring materials and subcontract packages
Negotiating subcontract agreements and supplier terms
Managing subcontractor accounts and valuations
Supporting procurement strategies across projects

Estimating & Tender Support

Assisting with tendering and estimating activities
Reviewing project opportunities and pricing information
Supporting commercial input into bids and submissions
Providing cost advice during pre-construction stages

Team Leadership

Managing and mentoring an Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Providing commercial guidance and support to project teams
Supporting the development of commercial processes and best practices

Reporting & Stakeholder Management

Producing accurate commercial reports and forecasts
Working closely with operational teams to maximise project performance
Attending client, site, and commercial meetings
Building and maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships

Requirements

Essential:

Minimum 7 years' Quantity Surveying experience
Strong UK civil engineering and groundworks experience
Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
Proven track record of cost control, forecasting, CVRs, and change management
Strong subcontractor procurement and negotiation experience
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel
Experience using Bluebeam
Strong communication and commercial management skills
Full UK Driving Licence
