Rate: £30 per hour
Contract: 6 Months
Location: Bristol (Hybrid/Site-Based)
Design Engineer - Highways Design
An experienced Highways Design Engineer is required to support the delivery of a major programme of sustainable transport and active travel infrastructure projects. With significant investment secured for transport improvements, this role will play a key part in reviewing, coordinating and delivering schemes that enhance walking, cycling and public transport networks across the region.
Working alongside consultants, project managers and operational teams, you will provide technical oversight throughout the design and delivery lifecycle, ensuring schemes are developed in line with current standards, policies and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
·Review highway design drawings, reports and technical documentation.
·Ensure compliance with relevant standards, policies and design guidance.
·Coordinate and oversee Road Safety Audit processes and designer responses.
·Act as the technical liaison between design consultants and operational delivery teams.
·Review and approve designs for internal governance and stakeholder review.
·Support utility coordination and NRSWA-related activities.
·Assist with cost estimates, programme development and risk management.
·Coordinate input from street lighting, drainage, landscape, traffic signals and asset management teams.
·Support Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and construction planning activities.
·Attend project meetings, stakeholder engagement events and site visits as required.
·Provide technical support across a wider portfolio of highways and transport schemes when required.
Requirements
·Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
·Strong experience in highways design and active travel infrastructure projects.
·Working knowledge of AutoCAD and specialist highway design software.
·Thorough understanding of TSRGD and relevant sections of the DMRB.
·Experience delivering schemes in accordance with Local Transport Note 1/20.
·Previous involvement with Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).
·Experience reviewing and commenting on technical designs prepared by others.
·Knowledge of planning applications for transport-related infrastructure works.
·Experience managing budgets and cost estimates.
·Good understanding of CDM Regulations and construction project delivery.
·Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
·Full UK driving licence.
