Mechanical Commissioning Lead – Contract (Outside IR35)

Location - North West England

Contract Length - 6 Months - June start

Outside IR35

H9 Talent Solutions are looking for an experienced Mechanical Commissioning Lead to support the delivery and commissioning of a new-build energy asset in the North West. This is a key site-based role responsible for leading mechanical commissioning activities through pre-commissioning, cold and hot commissioning, testing, and final handover phases.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Commissioning Manager, EPC contractors, OEMs, construction teams, and client representatives to ensure safe and efficient commissioning execution across all mechanical systems.

This role would suit an individual with a strong background in large-scale industrial, power generation, Energy from Waste, CHP, CCGT, process plant, or heavy industrial projects.

Role & Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate all mechanical commissioning activities on site.

Support development and execution of commissioning plans, procedures, and schedules.

Manage mechanical commissioning teams, subcontractors, and specialist vendors.

Oversee pre-commissioning and commissioning of mechanical plant systems including rotating equipment, piping systems, utilities, valves, pumps, compressors, HVAC, and associated balance of plant systems.

Ensure commissioning activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with project specifications and quality requirements.

Review and approve RAMS, commissioning documentation, and test packs.

Coordinate system walkdowns, punch listing, and system handovers.

Interface with construction, electrical, C&I, process, and operations teams to ensure integrated commissioning delivery.

Attend daily coordination meetings and provide commissioning progress updates.

Support troubleshooting, fault finding, and resolution of technical issues during commissioning phases.

Ensure compliance with site HSE procedures, permit-to-work systems, and commissioning safety rules.

Monitor commissioning progress against programme milestones and report any risks or delays.

Support client witnessing, performance testing, and final acceptance activities.

Skills & Experience

Proven experience as a Mechanical Commissioning Lead or Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer on large industrial or energy projects.

Strong background within power generation, Energy from Waste, CHP, CCGT, petrochemical, process plant, or similar heavy industrial environments.

Experience working on new-build energy assets through commissioning and startup phases.

Strong understanding of mechanical systems, commissioning methodologies, and handover processes.

Ability to manage multiple stakeholders within a fast-paced project environment.

Excellent communication and coordination skills.

Strong HSE awareness and commitment to safe systems of work.

CSCS / CCNSG / SMSTS or equivalent site safety certification preferred
