Summary:

The Sr. Medical Transcriptionist/Speech Recognition Editor edits speech-recognized drafts by comparing audio to the draft document and correcting inaccuracies. The incumbent may also interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare providers to document patient care. The nature of the work performed requires advanced medical language knowledge and understanding comprising a full complement of medical specialties.

Responsibilities:

(80%)* Applies advanced medical language skill and understanding to edit speech-recognized draft documents and/or transcribe medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care on a continual basis. Utilizes all available reference materials to ensure the accuracy of the edited/transcribed document. Recognizes, interprets and evaluates inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical text drafts and/or dictation appropriately clarifying, flagging or reporting them, as needed.

(20%)* Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to the editing and transcription of patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution also on a frequent basis.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ability to use an extensive array of professional reference materials.

Ability to operate word processing equipment, dictation and transcription equipment, and other equipment as specified, and to troubleshoot as necessary.

Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision.

Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.

Ability to concentrate.

Excellent listening skills.

Excellent eye, hand, and auditory coordination.

Ability to understand and apply relevant legal concepts (e.g., confidentiality).

Certified medical transcription (CMT) status preferred.

Certifications and Licensures:

FINGERPRIN: Fingerprinting

Required Education:

High school diploma or GED is required

One year medical transcription experience with completion of college-level courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Ability to apply a broad base of medical language and understanding to accurately interpret and transcribe medical dictation; work independently; operate designated word processing, dictation and transcription equipment; work under pressure with time constrains; to use designated reference materials as well as software quality and production enhancement features; excellent listening skills with the ability to understand diverse accents, dialects, and varying dictation styles; written and oral communication skills including English usage, grammar, punctuation, and style; eye, hand, and auditory coordination; knowledge of medical transcription guidelines and practices required.

Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Sedentary.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
