Overview:

The Residential Registered Nurse-RN in Health Services will act as the Clinical Nurse who provides mental health services to the clients we serve in collaboration with the Health Services Manager.  The position has duties similar to that of a school nurse and a nurse working in a doctor's office. The Residential Registered Nurse-RN is responsible for ensuring the clients attend scheduled appointments; all medications are given according to physician orders; all prescription and non-prescription drugs are properly controlled; and all documentation is completed regarding the administration and control of medication.  The Residential Registered Nurse-RN is responsible for providing support to the Residential Operations Manager for any staff training needs and or corrective action regarding medication distribution.  The Registered Nurse may provide first aid or emergency medical care, but generally is responsible for assessing the needs of a client to determine whether on-site medical is appropriate, or the client should be transported to an Urgent Treatment Center or emergency Room for immediate assistance. The Registered Nurse reports to the Health Services Manager, who is a medical school graduate.

Minimum 

Position Qualifications:        

Must be a Registered Nurse (RN) with a current license in the State of Kentucky.  

Requires a minimum of 2 years prior nursing experience (strongly preferred), or a minimum of 1 year of prior nursing experience as an R.N. plus 1 year of prior work in health care as a nurse's aide, home health aide or like type of position.  Experience in a mental health setting preferred. 

Prefer experience working with children.

Ability to conduct in-service training for youth care staff in administration and documentation of medication as required by policy (MAR).

Demonstrate ability to lead effectively and motivate others.

Highly organized and proficient at multi-tasking.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

Must have a current driver’s license with insurance.

Must be able to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Demonstrate proven sensitivity to the various cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of Children’s Home clients and staff, including a commitment to use of the Sanctuary Model and to the philosophy of All Children, All Families framework of cultural competencies.

  Position Summar

Essential Job Functions:

Responsible for coordinating client appointments and medication related needs with the Health Services Manager and consulting psychiatrist as required by licensing/contract or directed by child’s medical needs.

Responsible for coordinating the completion and documentation of all medical appointments according to agency policy and procedure in collaboration with the Health Services Manager.

Responsible for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities and Risk Management of medical and medication related events in collaboration with the Health Services Manager..

Knowledge and use of the Sanctuary Model of trauma informed care. Use of the S.E.L.F. framework in service delivery as well as adherence to, and modeling of, the Seven Commitments when interacting with others and conducting one’s self.

Responsible for training Residential Treatment Specialists to properly administer medication and complete documentation in collaboration with the Health Services Manager.

Coordinates with the Health Services Manager, Vice-President of Residential Services, and director of Quality Assurance regarding the maintenance of OIG practices and agency policy standards.

Monitor administration of medication through MAR, med count sheet. Will also provide monthly documentation on DSS 169 and 1294.  Including conducting regular cottage medication reviews.

Coordinates with the pharmacy to ensure proper protocol of medication storage and distribution.

Report all errors in medication documentation and administration. Ensure corrections are properly documented and complete appropriate follow-up.

Ensure all drug control policies are followed, including the safe storage of medication, both prescription and over the counter. Also ensure the proper disposal of unused medications.

Assist the Health Services Manager provide in-service training for our PRTF program on the medication, administration, emergency, and routine medical care policies to the Residential Treatment Specialists.

Provide support to Residential Operations Manager and Residential Building Managers for staff corrective actions and retraining needs.

Keep medical summaries of residents on file for future reference. On a client’s planned discharge, or as soon as possible after an unplanned discharge, prepare a medical discharge form to be sent with each resident and keep a copy on file at Children's Home of Northern Kentucky in the client’s file.

Coordinate the provision of an education class for clients regarding STD, HIV, birth control and hygiene with the cottage supervisor.

Coordinate a review of all medications with the clients on a monthly basis and document purpose and side effects.

Administer Medication when onsite as needed.

Order medical supplies as needed.

Must be able to oversee and facilitate drug tests as needed.

Must be able to commute between the two Residential Campuses (Burlington, Ky and Covington, Ky)

Support our Covington and Boone County school partners with any nursing service needs

Provide crisis intervention as needed.

Must be able to administer and read TB Test for all CHNK associates and clients.

Participates in on call rotation and is available and on call for emergent situations on a 24/7 basis.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Attend required trainings as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned by Health Services Manager, Vice President of Residential Services, and Chief Programming Officer.
