Job Summary:

Assesses the nutritional needs of individuals and groups. Plans and implements nutrition counseling and education services adapted to the cultural, social, and economic conditions of the service population.

Job Duties:

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.  Practices only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.  Maintains knowledge and skills required for continuing professional competence.  Participates in planning for the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program with other team members.  Assists with meeting requirements to maintain accreditation for the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program with the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Formulates modified diet plans and provides nutrition counseling to clients with therapeutic diet orders.  Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy to high-risk patients identified through patient registers, nutrition screening assessments, and staff referrals.  Plans, schedules, and conducts training programs for patients, families, and clinic staff.  Performs Quality Improvement (QI) activities and participates in other QI activities in the clinic.  Coordinates Medical Nutrition Therapy and nutrition education activities for the clinical site.  Adheres to professional ethical standards.  Maintains and updates documentation of nutrition counseling inpatient records as needed to meet the nutritional needs of the patient. Takes reasonable action to inform a client's physician and any appropriate allied health care provider in cases where a client's nutritional status indicates a change in medical status.  Plans, conducts or participates in and interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current research related to nutritional care.  Complies with the provisions of the Oklahoma Controlled Substances Act.  Adheres to professional ethical standards as established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Commission on Dietetic Registration.  Complies with the applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety, and confidentiality of any health services record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.  Maintains verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal and/or state regulations.  Maintains the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or otherwise authorized or required by law or court order.  Notifies the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision within thirty (30) days of any change in address, telephone number, and employment and shall supply an updated copy to Cherokee Nation Human Resources.  Renews licenses or certifications and specialty designations before the expiration date.  Provides Cherokee Nation Human Resources with a copy of all licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof.  Maintains HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times and protect all personal health information (PHI) as it relates to patient data.  Other duties may be assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   

No supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT 

Must possess a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree from American colleges or universities which meets the requirements of the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT 

No additional experience required.

COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should have knowledge of Database, Inventory, Spreadsheet, and Word Processing software, and Order processing systems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS  

Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.  Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) and possess and maintain a license (LD) from the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision OR be registered and licensure eligible pending Board approval.  If a Registered Dietitian (RD) is transitioning from Provisional Licensure (PLD) to a Licensed Dietitian (LD) they must have a temporary letter authorizing practice under general supervision issued by the Oklahoma State Medical Board.  Preferred Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist or CDCES.  Must possess and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Must have knowledge of computers and audio/video equipment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS  

Employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).  Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information.  Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
