As a result, a full-time position is available for a Department Manager to lead our Northeast Traffic and Advanced Mobility group at our Columbia, Maryland office. The Northeast department market territory includes Maryland and West Virginia. The territory may change at the direction of the Business Unit Leader.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include:

Supervise and Manage Department Staff Assign work to staff and monitor workload

Plan and effectively utilize general time to advance the quality and efficiency of the department

Review and approve the department’s employee timesheets and expenses

Coordinate, evaluate, and recommend department staff training

Review and approve/deny overtime, vacation, community service requests

With direction and assistance from human resources, participate in interviews with candidates and selection of staff

Evaluate department staff; conduct employee performance appraisals and assist with creation and execution of employees’ professional development plans

Oversee Department Workload Manage projects and/or provide technical oversight

Market and obtain projects, including proposal writing, handling "cold calls" on existing and potential clients, presentations, and interviews

Negotiate and administer contracts

Review and approve budgets for projects and monitor project performance and profitability

Review and approve billing each month; prepare reports for billing

Recommend purchases necessary for the department’s operation

Company Management FunctionsCoordinate department operations with the business unit leader

Visualize growth areas related to the department

Work with business unit leader regarding strategic planning for the department

Work with other departments within Mead & Hunt to coordinate work and staff assignments

Coordinate with the business unit leader or group leader to develop and monitor annual business plan for the department

Maintain personal licenses, memberships, registrations, and review/seal documents as required/requested

Keep up to date on relevant technical and management issues related to the technical discipline as well as management of a department

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least five years of relevant experience in the consulting industry.

The ideal candidate will have any/all of the following:  

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

At least 10 years of relevant experience in the Maryland and/or West Virginia traffic engineering markets

Demonstrated leadership skills

Goal-oriented, collaborative, team-player

Strong written and verbal communications skills

Proven technical excellence in the field of Traffic & ITS engineering

Successful track record of client and task management including client feedback, financial performance, and business development

Salary Range: $150,000 to $200,000 – Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as: experience, skill set or location.
