Overview:
The Medical Assistant is a member of the Student Health Center team who is familiar with the function, priorities and needs of the Student Health Center. There is priority to assist the Physician and Nurse Practitioner in the delivery of primary and episodic care to Touro University California students. The Medical Assistant will take an active role in the accurate maintenance of health and immunization data required of students by their individual colleges.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the accurate maintenance of electronic student health records and the daily updates to those records as indicated.
Follows policies and procedures of the clinic and defers to the Lead Medical Assistant and Administrative Coordinator (LMAAC) for guidance with routine tasks.
Assists the physician and Nurse Practitioner with physicals, diagnostic testing, and other clinical procedures.
Prepares patients for examinations and treatments. Included are vital sign monitoring, recording of patient histories, chief complaints, drug allergies and current medications.
Prepares examination and treatment rooms and ensures that the rooms are clean and organized both before and after each patient.
Ensures rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and instruments.
Monitors vaccines, medications and supplies for expiration dates and advises the Lead Medical Assistant/Administrative Coordinator (LMAAC) of those items that are expired, or nearing expiration dates.
Monitors, records and ensures vaccines housed in the refrigerator are temperature controlled vaccines. Maintains records for CLIA waived test kits and devices.
Maintains accurate vaccination records, inventories supplies, and alerts the Lead Medical Assistant/ Administrative Coordinator (LMAAC) when reorder of medications, vaccines and clinic supplies are needed.
Works with Student Health Director and the various colleges to organize, advertise and administer immunization clinics and screening events.
Provides information to students who have questions about their health requirements or concerns as appropriate for their scope of practice
Receives and responds to emails in a timely manner.
Maintains the security and confidentiality of patient records and encounters in accordance with FERPA and HIPPA regulations.
Schedules patients for appointments as needed.
Documents patient information accurately and in a timely manner in the patient record.
Understand electronic medical record usage
Responds to patient messages timely, providing complete information via the electronic health record the medical care provider(s)Documents all patient calls and responses in the patient chart.
Keeps accurate supply records and provides timely notifcations to management of any discrepancies
Prints accurate Health Certificates based on documents and evidence.
Assist with triage of patient medical needs and appointments to ensure the smooth functioning of the clinic as appropriate for their scope of practice
Works on special projects and duties as needed and assigned
Exhibit willingness to learn and take on added responsibilities in the Student Health Center.
Serve as a Clery Act Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Must be able to work flexible hours, if necessary, some evenings and Sundays.
Qualifications:
MA with A.A. degree or tech. certification. and one year of job related experience
Current Basic Life Support certification.
TRAINING OR CERTIFICATION:
Medical Assistant Training Certificate from Accredited program
Current Basic Life Support.

· The computer competencies required to successfully accomplish the essential duties of this job are familiarity with booking patient appointments. Basic skills with Microsoft Office programs.
OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS: Working knowledge of use and purpose of medical equipment
· Manual blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes, Electric and tympanic thermometer, Pulse oximetry, glucometer, spirometer, nebulizer, AED
· Handling of syringes & needles for IM, SQ and intradermal administration of medications.
· Appropriate disposal of medical hazardous waste of these implements and medications
· Maintains cold chain of custody of vaccines and monitors Refrigerator/Freezer temperatures.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCY:
· Must be able to multi task and work in a team environment, ability to handle confidential matters (follow HIPAA guidelines), ability to perform professionally and calmly sometimes under hectic conditions, the ability to work in a structured environment. Must be able to work independently and be a self-starter.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Mandatory job related experience required:
· One year medical office experience preferred
· Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally
· Prior computer experience
· Ability to deal diplomatically with all types of individuals under stressful situations.
· Problem solving skills
