The Director of Research and Development (R&D) will spearhead innovation and development efforts within Onnit, focusing on the creation and optimization of dietary supplements. This role is pivotal in driving product development from concept through to commercialization, ensuring that all products meet the highest standards of safety, efficacy, and quality.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and implement R&D strategies aligned with the company's vision and business goals. 

Identify emerging trends, technologies, and market opportunities to guide innovation. 

Contribute to innovation, trouble shooting, and brainstorming ideas in a team environment for future platform growth in key consumer needed state areas. 

Lead the formulation, testing, and optimization of new dietary supplement products. 

Oversee the design and execution of clinical trials and other research studies to validate product efficacy and safety. 

Collaborate with cross-functional teams including brand, marketing, regulatory, and operations to ensure successful product launches.  

Develop and manage the R&D budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources. 

Collaborate with the QA/RA Team on master formulas, stability program, key raw material documentation, safety assessments, claim substantiation, product specification and label development.  

Lead sensory testing of prototypes and analyze/record results in a statistical/analytical manner.  

Address any issues related to product performance, stability, safety, or quality.

Provide regular updates to senior management on project status, milestones, and R&D achievements. 

Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the preparation and submission of regulatory documents and ensure compliance with FDA and other relevant agencies. 

Establish and maintain relationships with external research institutions, universities, and industry experts. 

Forge relationships with universities, key suppliers, and purchasing team to keep abreast of upcoming trends, to solicit and secure opportunities for new food ideas, technologies, ingredients, and packaging materials. 

Maintain branded ingredient and raw material database. 

Provide leadership and coordination to communicate and resolve issues pertaining to project timelines. 

Understand customer needs, business needs, and strategy by attending and participating in cross-functional team meetings. 

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending regulatory training, educational workshops, review professional publications, establish personal networks, and participate in professional societies. 

Support company sustainability initiatives

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) from a 4-year accredited college or university in Food Science, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry or Equivalent BS degree required; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.

7+ years of experience in R&D/PD within the dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, or related industry.

Advanced knowledge in supplement formulation, clinical research, regulatory affairs and more than one of the aforementioned formats (Powders, Capsules, Sports drinks, RTDs, Bars/RTE, etc.)

Proven track record of successful product development and commercialization.

Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and teams effectively.

Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.

Experience with advanced technologies and methodologies in supplement research.

Familiarity with international regulations and market requirements.

Strong network within the dietary supplement and health sciences communities
