Project Manager, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Overview:

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is a global leader in musculoskeletal care, dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education. As part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we have developed pathway programs to support and expose underrepresented individuals interested in pursuing careers in medicine, with a particular focus on orthopedics.

We seek an experienced, proactive Project Manager to oversee all pathway programs designed to provide immersive experiences for undergraduate and medical students. This work includes an 8-week summer internship program and the development of a yearlong research fellowship. The ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills and a passion for mentoring diverse students interested in medicine. Additionally, experience with grant writing or fundraising is a plus in helping support reporting to our philanthropic funders.

Position Description

Key Responsibilities:

Comprehensive Pathway Program Oversight:

Manage all operational aspects of multiple DEI pathway programs, including the 8-week summer premedical internship and a yearlong research fellowship for medical students. This aspect of the role includes coordinating clinical shadowing, research opportunities, educational lectures, and enhanced learning opportunities, including simulation lab experience, off-site activities, and mentorship activities.

Program Expansion & Development:

Lead efforts to expand DEI pathway programs by recruiting students from underrepresented groups and developing new initiatives, such as a visiting medical student scholarship rotation.

Scheduling & Coordination:

Coordinate complex schedules for participants, faculty, and mentors, ensuring flexibility to adapt to evolving personnel and program needs.

Tracking Outcomes & Reporting:

Implement and maintain a system and measures to track and assess participant progress and program effectiveness, ensuring alignment with HSS’s DEI goals.

Event Planning:

Plan and execute program-related events, including workshops, seminars, visits to sports team facilities, and networking opportunities for participants.

Stakeholder Engagement:

Build relationships with community partners, academic institutions, and internal stakeholders to enhance program reach and impact.

Grant Writing & Philanthropic Support (Optional):

In collaboration with the development team, assist with grant writing and reporting to funders of the pathway programs.

Team Collaboration:

Work closely with the DEI team and other departments, contributing to the success of all pathway initiatives and supporting cross-departmental collaboration.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

A bachelor’s degree is required, and a preference is given to project management, education, or healthcare backgrounds.

5+ years of experience in project management or program coordination, preferably in healthcare or education, with DEI program experience a plus.

Grant writing or fundraising experience is highly desirable but not required.

Key Skills:Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple programs and priorities.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage and support underrepresented groups in pursuing educational and career opportunities.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team and fast-paced environment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and project management tools.
