Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) will perform direct patient and delegation to department staff as appropriate in providing care and comfort to the patients. Knowledge and compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines relating to patient care will be maintained. This position cares for patients before, during and after angiography, interventional, angiographic cardiac catheterization procedures and other cardiac diagnostic testing and procedures. This includes pre-procedure assessment, pre-medication, documentation of cath process, post-cath care, patient education. Scrubs in for procedures and assists other members of the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

Responsibilities:

(35%)* Implements the coordination of resources and leads personnel and activities to accomplish objectives by motivating, educating, guiding and counseling through day to day operations by making staff assignments. Collaborates with physicians and staff for scheduling of add-on cases and procedures and providing break coverage when needed. Performs direct patient care for cardiovascular and interventional radiology procedures and operates equipment included in General RN Cath Lab responsibilities.

(25%)* Plans the program for action (objectives) by assisting the Nurse Manager / Nursing Program Coordinator / Program Manager / Program Director in developing, reviewing, and revising unit-specific policies/procedures, objectives, resource management, and purpose. Assists in coordination of necessary staff in services for continued competencies.

(10%)* Evaluates by measuring outcomes against set standards, reporting results and taking appropriate corrective action on potential or actual variances.

(20%)* Self Management - Holds self accountable for delivery of responsible care, demonstrates effective communication skills and interpersonal relationships.

(10%)* Performs routine check daily/weekly checkoffs for department needs as assigned by department manager.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in other radiology/cardiology procedures as needed. Required 30 minute response time to arrive on site when on-call Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit. Attend and participate in professional association activities and programs to assure being current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards. Possesses a thorough knowledge of pre, intra, and post procedure routine. Initiates a teaching plan appropriate to the procedure and the patient’s level of understanding. Possesses a thorough knowledge of physician preference and routine. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and physicians to assure that appropriate care is provided. Inserts PICC lines via ultrasound guidance and provides instruction/education to patients. Demonstrates an understanding of all medications administered for care of the patient. Provides sedation monitoring in accordance with the hospital policy and document appropriately. Demonstrates the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information. Oversees/maintains use and function of nursing equipment, crash cart, IVACs, O2, defibrillators, Nova StatStrip Glucose Meter, and other nursing supplies (Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE/IV etc.). Required to be part of transport team when patients have an intraaortic balloon pump or ventricular support device placed and needing higher level of care. Transfers patients, stocks supplies, and performs basic office functions. Other duties as assigned. Certifications and Licensures:

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - within 1 month of hire or transfer RN -

Required Education:

Registered Nurse Required Equivalent Experience - Knowledge of nursing technique as normally acquired through completion of an Associate’s degree in Nursing culminating in licensure as a RN. ACLS certified.

Cath Lab experience preferred as normally acquired through 2 year’s experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of critical care nursing as normally acquired through 2 year’s experience working in a Medical Center and experience in the Cath Lab/CVIR preferred. Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Previous direct patient care experience preferred. Knowledge of cardiac stress testing preferred. Knowledge of moderate sedation, medication and IV solution administration preferred. Knowledge of invasive radiology procedures and cardiac catheterization preferred. Knowledge and operation of intraaortic balloon pump and ventricular assist device preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
