Job Title: Electrical Technician

Location: Coventry (Estates Department)

Salary: £35,882 + 17% shift allowance

As part of the Late/Weekend Shift team, you'll receive a generous shift allowance (17% of your basic hourly rate) for working late shifts and weekends. The typical shift pattern consists of 8 shifts of up to 10 hours each over a 14-day period, with a 36.5-hour workweek. Working hours typically range from 13:00 to 23:00 on weekdays and from 07:30 to 18:00 on weekends.

Week 1

Mon 9 hrs, Tues 9hrs, Wed 9hrs,Thurs 0, Fri 0, Sat 9.5 hrs, Sun 9.5 hrs

Week 2

Role Overview:

We have a great opportunity for an Electrical Technician to join one of the UK’s leading universities. The Electrical Technician plays a key role in providing a critical response service for the University, ensuring all electrical and mechanical systems are maintained efficiently. The position involves performing routine, planned, and reactive maintenance, fault diagnostics, and minor installations for electrical services across the University campus. You will ensure that statutory, planned, and breakdown tasks are carried out safely, cost-effectively, and in alignment with KPIs and Service Level Agreements.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical:

Respond promptly to job requests via the job notification system, ensuring safe and efficient job completion within target SLAs.

Address emergency situations related to: Power supplies, Emergency lighting systems, Lighting and control systems, Alarm systems, Motors, BMS controls, Portable appliances

Perform planned maintenance and reactive remedial work to keep essential university facilities operational, ensuring compliance with statutory testing and inspections, including Periodic Inspection and Testing, Emergency Lighting Testing, Fire Alarm Testing, Portable Appliance Testing, Defective repair works

Diagnose faults, assess job feasibility, and consult with the Electrical Supervisor as necessary.

Investigate complex issues and recommend appropriate solutions, including the need for specialist intervention.

Assist with minor power system installations and provide advice on the installation of new products and equipment.

Health and Safety:

Assess potential risks associated with tasks and ensure compliance with risk assessments and method statements.

Participate in hazard identification and risk assessment processes within the department.

Assist in ensuring statutory compliance tasks are correctly completed and recorded.

Understand and interpret record drawings, including asbestos and fire drawings.

Organisation:

Manage and prioritise your own workload, taking into account the urgency of tasks, building access requirements, and the number of people affected.

Ensure proper job documentation, including timesheets, service records, and work instructions.

Calculate and order materials required for jobs through the approved ordering system.

Financial:

Provide cost estimates for contracted services and minor works.

Manage small works projects within budget, ensuring they meet legislative requirements and the University’s standards.

Offer budgetary advice on product specifications for plant, tools, and equipment.

Communication and Customer Service:

Liaise with Electrical Supervisors, colleagues, contractors, and other University staff to ensure minimal disruption during planned and reactive maintenance.

Provide expert technical advice and ensure service delivery meets high safety and quality standards.

Communicate effectively with a diverse customer base.

General Duties:

Drive University vehicles to transport staff, tools, and materials.

Ensure work areas are left clean and tidy upon completion of tasks.

Perform other duties as required in line with the position's grade.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

* A recognised apprenticeship or equivalent training, or significant practical experience in electrical building services across commercial, industrial, and domestic environments.

* NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installations or Maintenance, City & Guilds 236 part 1, 2 or 2330 Levels 2 and 3, BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

* City & Guilds 2395 Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations.

* Strong understanding of Health & Safety practices and statutory compliance within the electrical field.

* Proven ability to perform installation, maintenance, and testing in line with BS7671 and the Electricity at Work Act.

* Ability to prioritise and manage your own workload to meet SLAs with minimal supervision.

* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate and resolve issues independently.

* Strong communication and customer service skills, both written and verbal.

* Full, clean UK or EU driving licence.

Desirable:

* Knowledge of fire alarm systems (BS 5839) and experience as a Low Voltage/High Voltage Authorised Person (LV/HV AP).

* Experience with confined spaces, including emergency escape breathing apparatus.

* Knowledge of mechanical building systems and asbestos materials
