Unit Clerk (Full-Time)

The Unit Clerk will perform clerical duties and provides administrative and secretarial support to one or more nursing units and serves as a point of contact for staff, patients, care givers and other healthcare organizations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Duties/Responsibilities: Communicates with members of the health care team, patients, and visitors using verbal and written means and equipment such as the telephone and intercom.

Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

Stamps, assembles, completes, and processes patients' charts. Keeps patient records accurately identified. Transcribes doctors orders per hospital policy.

Prepares and maintains the units medical information system including patient profiles.

Checks charts daily for incomplete histories and operative summaries and brings these to the attention of the appropriate member of the health care team for correction. Checks charts and removes nonpermanent reports when permanent reports are obtained.

Prepares special forms such as body-release permits. Obtains closed records from Medical Records.

Prepares daily patient services requisitions.

Sends profile and change-of-bed status to the pharmacy on patient admission, discharge, and transfer.

Initiates daily worksheets such as temperature, diet, defecation, and lab slip.

Orders unit supplies to maintain inventory of the unit's equipment stock and supplies. Assists with receiving, distributing, and sorting supplies brought to the unit. Prepares requisitions and reports for maintenance repairs. Checks to ensure accurate charging of exchange-cart items.

Maintains accurate time and pay records, timecards, and work schedules. Notifies the Nursing Office of schedule changes and forwards the paycheck list to the Nursing Office.

Obtains lab and X-ray reports and notifies doctors of results.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

Ability to type.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent time management skills.

Excellent customer service and negotiating skills.

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent required.

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
