We have a great opportunity to join our Education team as a Functional Skills Outreach Tutor for Novus, our prison education provider at HMP High Down offered on a permanent, full-time basis working 37 hours per week.

What the role entails

As an outreach Functional Skills Tutor at HMP Highdown, you will play a crucial role in helping our learners develop essential skills that will serve them throughout their lives. You will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective lessons on the wings, tailoring your teaching to meet the needs of each individual learner. Your passion for education and dedication to our learners' success will make you a valuable asset to our team. This is an amazing opportunity to work as part of a close knit, supportive team who are committed to staff wellbeing.

You will be joining a team of 7 Functional Skills tutors who are led by an experienced manager, supporting with CPD and training. This is part of a wider team of 26 people, made up of teachers, support workers, administration and managers.

This is a part time outreach role is 18.5 hours per week over 2.5 days. Monday - Wednesday 8am to 5pm with a 12.45pm finish on a Friday. Out of this, you will be working with learners either on a 1-to 1 basis or in small groups at any time for 15.5 hours The remaining time includes administration/preparation time. All planning and marking are done on site within the working hours and there is not a requirement to complete any additional extra-curricular activities apart from within your working day.

Responsibilities

Develop and deliver high-quality functional skills lessons in English and Maths.
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
Assess learner needs and develop individualized learning plans.
Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
Support learners in achieving their functional skills qualifications.
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure the best possible outcomes for all learners.
Stay up to date with curriculum changes and best practices in functional skills education.What we need from you

In order to be successful in the role of Tutor, you will need:

A teaching qualification or subject specialist qualification at Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) with a commitment to obtain the relevant outstanding Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) qualification within a specified time scale (required)
Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
Track record of effective teaching in subject specialism and Maths & EnglishIdeally you will want to be a part of a team which has at its core a focus on improving lives and enabling and equipping learners to develop, grow and be equipped for a life of work and success. You'll be a self-starter with a passion to learn and grow yourself and will bring passion, dedication, and positivity to your new role.
