Overview:

Texas Oncology is looking for a full-time Remote Palliative Care Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team!  This position will support the Virtual Care Team. The hours for this position are Mon-Fri from 8am-5pm.

What does the Palliative Care Clinic Registered Nurse (RN) do?  

Under minimal supervision, the Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental and age specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards. 

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Coordination: Provide telephonic or virtual support to patients and families, addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs related to serious illness or end-of-life care.

Symptom Management: Assess and manage symptoms related to pain, nausea, fatigue, and other conditions, ensuring the patient’s comfort and quality of life.

Care Plan Development: Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to create, implement, and update individualized care plans that align with the patient’s goals and values.

Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and their families on disease processes, symptom management, and end-of-life care options, empowering them to make informed decisions.

Communication: Serve as a liaison between the patient, family, and healthcare providers, ensuring clear and compassionate communication about the patient's condition, treatment options, and care goals.

Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of all patient interactions, assessments, and care plans in the electronic health record (EHR) system.

Advocacy: Advocate for patients’ needs and preferences within the healthcare system, ensuring that their wishes are respected and honored throughout their care journey.

Specialty Specific Responsibilities for Palliative Care RN

End-of-Life Care: Provide guidance and support to patients and families navigating end-of-life decisions, including hospice care, advanced directives, and managing final wishes.

Bereavement Support: Offer emotional and practical support to families before and after a patient’s death, helping them cope with grief and connecting them with bereavement resources as needed.

Ethical Decision-Making: Assist in ethical decision-making processes related to treatment options, patient autonomy, and the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatments when appropriate.

Cultural Sensitivity: Provide culturally competent care, recognizing and respecting the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and practices of patients and their families in the palliative care setting.

Continuous Education: Stay informed about the latest developments in palliative care, including new treatments, best practices, and changes in regulations, to ensure the highest standard of care.

Qualifications:

Minimum Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

Required Education/Training – Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.

Required Licensure – RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in Texas. Must maintain continuing education requirements.

Required Additional Certification – Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 

Preferred Business Experience – 3-5 years nursing experience including at least one year in oncology preferred

Preferred Specialized Knowledge/Skills – Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse (CHPN) or Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred

Working Conditions:

Remote Work Environment: This position is fully remote, requiring the nurse to work from home in a quiet, private location with reliable internet access.

Virtual Collaboration: Regularly collaborate with the interdisciplinary team via video conferencing, phone calls, and other digital communication platforms

Technological Proficiency: Must be comfortable using telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and other digital tools necessary for remote patient care and communication
