General Job Description:

Position Overview:

The Sales & Use Tax Manager will be responsible for managing the organization's sales and use tax compliance processes, ensuring adherence to tax laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions. This role requires a highly skilled individual who can oversee the preparation, filing, and reporting of sales and use taxes, while also implementing strategies to minimize tax liabilities and maximize compliance efficiency. The Sales & Use Tax Manager will work closely with internal departments, such as accounting, purchasing, and operations, to ensure accurate tax treatment on purchases and sales transactions.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the preparation, filing, and payment of sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions, ensuring all deadlines are met.

Conduct research and stay updated on changes in state and local tax laws and regulations that may impact the company’s tax obligations.

Manage and maintain tax exemption certificates, ensuring proper documentation for tax-exempt customers and transactions.

Lead the process of reconciling and reviewing tax accounts, identifying discrepancies, and resolving issues.

Develop, implement, and enforce sales and use tax policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.

Manage sales and use tax audits, including preparing supporting documentation, addressing auditor inquiries, and resolving audit issues.

Collaborate with internal teams such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Purchasing to ensure accurate tax coding on purchases and sales.

Identify opportunities for process improvements and system automation to enhance efficiency in tax compliance.

Provide training and guidance to internal departments on sales and use tax matters.

Monitor tax rates and product taxability in various jurisdictions to ensure accurate invoicing.

Prepare tax-related reports for senior management, highlighting risks, opportunities, and key compliance metrics.

Specific Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

CPA or Master’s in Taxation preferred.

Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in sales and use tax compliance in a multi-state environment.

Strong understanding of sales and use tax laws and regulations in the U.S.

Experience managing sales and use tax audits and preparing supporting documentation.

Proficiency with tax preparation and research software (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, OneSource) and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Dynamics).

Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex tax issues to non-tax professionals.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
