Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day decisions involved in operating this department, which includes quality assurance monitoring, purchasing, assisting manager with budgeting, assisting manager with personnel selection, inventory control, and assisting manager with development and implementation of new and ongoing programs. Responsible for clinical guidance, leadership, and competence of staff, coordinates respiratory/ student’s activities in the hospital setting. This position covers MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.

Responsibilities:

(25%)* Assures that all procedures are performed in accordance with currently recognized therapeutic practices in a competent and professional manner. Develops, maintains and refines patient driven protocols according to best practices. Payroll approval in conjunction with manager. Monitoring PRC Dashboard. Research variances in care and document in appropriate software. Finalizes department schedule and covers vacancies. Hiring, disciplinary action and training

(25%)* Helps prepare the annual department budget with manager. Maintains financial and statistical data to generate monthly variance reports and quality assurance reports, all in conjunction with manager. Remains conscious of cost and duty to organize departmental work efficiently and economically. Assists with annual education plan for the department. Review and be familiar with current trends, problems, and issues impacting Respiratory Care, both locally and globally. Plan and develop educational experiences and/or competencies to address these issues. Monthly department meetings collaborating with manager.

(25%)* Responsible for monitoring performance of all staff and process improvement. Assists or directs monthly department meetings and provides periodic in servicing to departmental personnel. Schedules all personnel for participation in all appropriate education programs. Prepares and presents regular in service education. Coordinates clinical rotations for respiratory students and provides educational opportunities to all school affiliates.

(25%)* Establishes and maintains good rapport with all attending physicians and consulting physicians, as well as all medical center departments and personnel. Develops, provides and maintains educational programs for the staff, patients, family of the patient and the community we serve. Develop and implement CEU opportunities, departmental competencies and annual competencies.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Monitors the quality and appropriateness of Respiratory Services through the quality assurance program

Provides instruction for department staff and hospital personnel in Respiratory Care as needed

Maintains adequate inventory and supplies as well as, assures that all equipment is cleaned, sterilized, serviced and in good repair at all times.

Writes and revises departmental policy and procedure manual.

Performs and completes special projects in addition to routine work assignments, as needed or assigned by Manger.

Carries out all Respiratory Care modalities according to orders and protocol, as needed.

Certifications and Licensures:

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Required     Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer.

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required     Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer.

NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation

Required     Equivalent Experience - NRP certification within 12 months of hire or transfer date effective 1/1/2017.

PALS - Ped Advance Life Support

Required     Equivalent Experience - required within 12 months of hire or 12 months from 10/01/2023 for anyone hired prior to this date.

RT - Licensed Respiratory Therapist

Required    Equivalent Experience - Graduate of an AMA approved school of respiratory therapy. Must be eligible for licensure in respiratory therapy in the state of Michigan and be licensed in the state of Michigan within 30 days of hire or transfer.

TEAM ADVANCED - Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt

Required    Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of day to day Medical Center operations.

Must have previous acute care experience. Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly(67-100%ortheworkday)10lbs.
