Summary:

This position performs tasks of varying complexity. These include: cleans, terminally disinfects/sterilizes surgical equipment; maintains necessary documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies; assists the physician, anesthesiologist, and nurse as needed; assists with surgery center turnover including stocking of supply shelves; and maintaining departmental charge and tracking information. Hours are flexible according to the needs of the departments.

Responsibilities:

(35%)* Cleans anesthesia equipment between cases including restocking of supplies, anesthesia drugs, and equipment.  Assists anesthesiologist with pre-operative anesthesia blocks.

(35%)* Provides for sanitation of surgery center throughout the day, stocks work areas of surgery center with supplies including, but not limited to:  sanitation supplies, linens, solutions, and specimen containers.

(15%)* Maintains appropriate/accurate documentation records of the reprocessing and sterilization process as directed by regulatory agencies and the medical center policy.

(15%)* Applies the principles of sterile techniques while handling trays of sterile instruments and sterile packages.  Assists with patient positioning and patient preparation for surgery.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs point of care laboratory testing.

Assist during intubations.

Maintains immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures.

Assists with blocks in pre-holding area.

In the performance of the regular job duties, it is appropriate for this job code to have access to the medication room and supply room for the purpose of stocking.

Assists anesthesia in the pre-op area as needed.

Ensures anesthesia equipment is properly disinfected and cleaned after use per hospital infection control policy.

Assists in maintaining an appropriate level of supplies in each operating room.

Communicates with the Biomedical Department and department supervisor or manager to assure the availability of properly functioning equipment.

Develops proficiency in the use of the Medivator, autoclave and Sterrad NX for the processing of scopes and surgical instruments.

Process instruments and equipment not sent to Sterile Processing Department.

Demonstrates a knowledge and proficiency in the use of alternative terminal disinfection methods.

Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA).

Other duties as assigned.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when setting up, cleaning, maintaining, and handling anesthesia drugs and apparatus required.

Demonstrated completion of yearly unit competency requirements.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
