What You'll Do:

We are currently seeking  Manufacturing Engineering Student to work part-time at our facility in Sparta, TN. 

As part of Lean Manufacturing, you will be responsible for documenting standard processes, performing time studies of various processes, analyzing and making recommendations for material flow and presentation, and for development of work cell layouts of the plant. This position will work closely with the Lean Manufacturing Engineer to accomplish plant objectives by improving processes within the facility.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Layout CAD

Takes measurements of machines, worktables, columns, racks, and other work cell attributes

Translates those measurements into CAD software to form blocks and uses appropriate file naming structure when saving and editing blocks

Arranges blocks in 2D CAD layout in reference to one another and to other plant landmarks such as columns, walls or existing machine locations

Uses appropriate layers as denoted in Wilson Sporting Goods Co. standards to ensure consistency across layouts.

Training & Hands-on experience in Lean Tools

Introduction to lean tools: 5S, Standard Work, PDCA, Gemba, KPI’s. 8 wastes, Kaizen, and Takt time

Additional Lean Tools: Poka Yoke (error proofing), Kanban/Pull systems, JIT, Bottleneck analysis, SMED, and Material Presentation (point of use storage)

Other topics/tools as time allows or as specific projects require their use

Time Studies

Training on how to perform a basic time study

Taking video of operators as they perform their work

Breakdown of work content: understanding what steps are necessary and what is considered waste. Being able to classify work as: Value-Added, Non-Value Added (required), and Non-Value Added (not required) and developing strategies to eliminate Non-Value Added (not required) steps in the process.

Using Time Study data to derive a database of labor standards that are used to set standard costs for products within the facility and calculate efficiency metrics on operators, processes, departments, and the plant as a whole.

What We're Looking For :

The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or a related area.

Other qualifications include:

Desire to do hands-on problem solving

Familiarity with computer technology and willingness to learn new systems

Experience with hand tools and/or power tools is a plus

Exceptional Service Orientation: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to empathize with shop floor personnel and team in sometimes intense situations.

Strong Listening and Communication skills: Can understand exactly what internal customers as well as what their team requires and effectively communicates the vision for their team

Patience and Tact: Skills to be utilized when dealing with difficult situations

Creative Thinking and Problem Solving: Develops new ideas to improve metrics within the plant such as efficiency, quality, on time delivery, and quality of life for the shop floor personnel.

Motivated and Professional: A commitment to improve your problem solving and engineering skills while accomplishing projects within the plant.

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Openness to constructive feedback and coaching from mentor

Ability to prioritize project work and take direction from manager when priorities change
