Clements Grey are working with a retained key client, an established R&D Manufacturer of Electronic Instruments supplied to the retail sector, to recruit a Production Engineering, Quality & Health & Safety Manager.

This critical leadership role will oversee the Production Engineering, Quality, and Health & Safety teams, ensuring compliance with ISO standards while promoting operational efficiency. The focus will be on aligning day-to-day production operations with the company’s strategic objectives, as well as driving improvements in quality, safety, and overall process optimization.

Duties, Responsibilities & Objectives

Production Engineering:

Ensure that Test, Inspection, and Calibration programs comply with established procedures and achieve world-class performance targets.

Implement Toolbox methodologies on the production floor to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

Lead cost-reduction initiatives to minimise unit costs and overall production spend.

Design and implement visual production systems to reduce dependence on administrative functions.

Periodically review and update the layout of production areas to optimize workflow and efficiency.

Implement and maintain quality control systems such as process flows, PFMEAs, methods, and SOPs to assure consistent quality.

Lead Capital Expenditure projects, ensuring thorough justification and payback integrity.

Conduct audits and drive proactive processes to ensure accuracy and value, focusing on TPM and BOM.

Collaborate with teams to define and improve operational practices on the production floor.

Implement efficiency improvements through engineering processes and manage the execution of engineering changes on the production floor.

Support Engineering during New Product Introduction (NPI), acting as the voice of Operations, ensuring seamless integration into production.

Define and arrange relevant rigs, fixtures, test programs, and software for both supply partners and internal production teams.

Manage the release of Smarteam data to Baan systems.

Quality:

Champion Toolbox techniques to drive profitability and responsiveness across production operations.

Reduce warranty costs and general quality costs, particularly First Time Pass Rate (FTPR) improvements.

Improve the PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) to enhance tracking, timeliness, and eliminate unnecessary complexity from the process.

Act as the primary point of contact for non-conformance issues, ensuring assertive resolution and championing product integrity.

Ensure new product launches meet company standards, are robust and reliable, and are ready for customer release.

Quickly identify and resolve quality issues, ensuring root causes are addressed within agreed timeframes.

Continuously review and refine quality standards and testing procedures to maintain consistent product compliance and reliability.

Ensure continued compliance with ISO standards and maintain quality certifications in both the UK and France.

Oversee the company’s corrective and preventative action programs, supporting continuous process improvement.

Develop and maintain an internal audit schedule aligned with company procedures.

Lead, motivate, and manage the Quality team to ensure a professional image is maintained internally and externally with suppliers and customers.

Increase the profile of the Quality department by fostering participation and buy-in from key managers and employees.

Provide monthly reports to the business on ongoing quality issues, including FTPR, internal/external firewall performance, and warranty trends.

Health & Safety:

Collaborate with Unit Management to develop and execute an annual tactical plan for Health & Safety objectives across UK and France business units.

Conduct gap analyses, presenting action plans to address identified focus areas.

Lead UK Health & Safety Committee meetings and ensure actions are completed to drive H&S objectives forward.

Provide ongoing development and reporting of H&S-related KPIs on a monthly basis.

Production Support:

Play an active role in the development of Process Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA), Quality Control Plans, and method sheet reviews to ensure best practices are consistently applied.

Collaborate closely with the production support team to investigate and resolve production issues as they arise, ensuring minimal downtime and operational disruption.

Competencies & Requirements

Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 management systems and Health & Safety management systems (NEBOSH certification or working towards it).

Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) and ERP systems (experience with Smarteam/Baan is advantageous).

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Access, and Visual Basic.

Proven experience within a production environment, ideally with external audits and a focus on metrology or safety.

Leadership experience in managing cross-functional teams in a production or operational environment.
