Our esteemed port services customer is seeking a Team Leader to head up their team of 5 operators and 1 chargehand at their busy Forest Products Dept, based at the port of Sheerness.

It is the largest terminal of its kind in the UK, handling 1.3 million tonnes of timber and forest products a year. The Port of Sheerness is a key commercial port for South East England. It is part of a unique and innovative port network operated by our client; connecting the UK and Ireland with the rest of the world.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a port environment (storage/warehousing/distribution) and will have preferably worked with paper/forest products. However, a suitably experienced person with the right skills and experience in warehousing/distribution could also be successful in the role.

The successful candidate will responsible for own Health and Safety and that of those working around you. Responsible for leading the team unloading, receipt, storage, picking, loading and despatching of customer goods whilst maintaining a high level of stock integrity and customer service.

Responsible for the planning and execution of operational loading and cargo receipt teams. Required to be adaptable to shipping and transport changes.

Expectations

* Responsible for day-to-day operational safety, quality and cost.

* Ensure goods receipt, storage, pick and despatch functions operate efficiently and maintaining a

* high level of stock integrity.

* Management of the team performance through employee engagement.

Main Responsibilities

* Ensure full compliance with Safety 365 at London Medway.

* Manage your team and contract staff to meet the required targets and ensure the operation remains profitable by balancing labour costs against revenue.

* Where necessary support the team on process to ensure timely completion of all tasks and duties.

* Liaise with Planning and Commodity leaders daily to understand the operational priorities.

* Develop a culture of continuous improvement in all staff.

* Ensure we provide an industry leading service to our customers (24/7 - 365 days per year).

* Monitor daily performances of all staff to meet customer deadlines.

* Demonstrate the Leadership behaviours and standards expected in line with our Core values.

* Lead change by promoting new approaches and effective communication

* Manage team performance through appraisals and feedback.

For this role, we ideally seek:

* Good knowledge of cargo handling methods and logistics

* Delivery of change projects and improvements

* Experience of managing staff

* Experience of working within fast paced operational environment

* Excellent communication skills

* IT and numeracy skills

* Good planning and analytical skills

* Required to utilise handheld technology with accuracy.

* Ability to handle and prioritise multiple tasks and change in a fast-moving operational environment.

* High level of numeracy and literacy skills.

* Ability to manage own workload.

* Ability to deliver against KPI targets.

* Required to be trained and maintain the certified standards of MHE.

* Knowledge of stock control and SAP systems.

* Experience of working within a fast-paced operational environment
