Nursing Shift Coordinator

The Nursing Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of nursing staff, and delegation, oversight, and coordination of nursing activities and functions on the assigned shift. The Nursing Coordinator practices good nursing judgment in every delegation decision and promotes cooperation and coordination of nursing activities within the interdisciplinary team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists in the interview process of applicants for unit nurse positions
Ensures that new nurses are oriented to the facility, the organization, the residents, and receive necessary training within the required time period.
Prepares and presents performance reviews for unit nurses as assigned.
Assigns unit nurses for assigned shift and ensures adequate staffing for a projected time period.
Counsels and takes corrective action with staff nurses as necessary.
Ensures that unit nurses understand and follow all facility policies, including Human Resources policies; communicates policy changes to unit nurses.
Investigates problems and complaints in consultation with the Director of Nursing.
Regularly attends and participates in DON/Nursing Coordinator meetings.
Schedules meetings with unit nurses to share information and address concerns.
Assists in planning, coordinating and conducting inservices and educational programs for licensed and unlicensed staff; Must teach, practice and enforce Universal and Standard Precautions at all times and follow the Heinzerling Exposure Control plan.
Cooperates with supervisory staff in other departments to resolve issues.
Assists in reviewing and revising nursing policies and procedures.
Assists unit nurses in collecting data for team meetings and assures attendance of unit nurses at team meetings, annual IHP meetings, and quarterly reviews; Oversees nursing follow-through of team decisions.
Reviews nursing documentation and plans of care and informs Director of Nursing of areas of concern; Reviews nursing care plans for compatibility with IHP.
Compiles the 24-hour facility report and keeps Director of Nursing informed as to the condition of residents.
In conjunction with the Director of Social Services and/or the Director of Nursing, communicates with parents/guardians of residents regarding acute illness, hospitalization, referral, or any other resident concern.
Contacts physician regarding areas of acute medical or behavioral concern for residents.
Ensures proper function, maintenance and repair of medical equipment; participates in evaluation of new medical products and equipment.
Monitors nursing supplies and communicates any needs to DON or medical records secretary.
Assumes role of unit nurse as needed.
Assumes on-call responsibilities as requested by DON.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Registered or licensed nurse who has graduated from an accredited school of nursing; at least 2 years of experience with individuals who have complex medical needs (if managing pediatric ventilator services); three to five years related experience and/or training is preferred.
