JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Service Line Administrator for the Jack Stephens Heart Institute, the Quality Assurance (QA) Nurse Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and communication and the overall management of nursing quality. Monitors, reports, and coordinates actions related to nursing quality initiatives to promote high quality nursing care. Collaborates with ancillary departments, staff and physicians to promote appropriate patient placement and high quality nursing care. Collaborates with appropriate departments and nursing leadership for development of documentation forms and MD orders.

Overall purpose is that of monitoring patient care in the JSHI by analyzing processes and procedures as follows:
Review and monitor documentation in cardiology patient records to ensure that such documentation meets regulatory requirements.
Monitor input into national databases (PCI and ICD registries, for example) for completeness and correctness
Monitor nationally mandated quality metrics such as length of stay, appropriate care for designated cardiac conditions (acute MI, CHF) and identify problems and outliers.
Monitor and report adverse patient events
Review incident reports
Review patient and staff complaints
Perform root cause analysis of adverse events, incident reports, patient and staff complaints and identify solutions. Work closely with corresponding medical and nursing and other appropriate director in this regard.
Identify safety problems, perform root cause analysis, and identify solutions.

Develop and implement programs to increase quality of care and measure outcomes of such programs.

Create programs that increase understanding and competence of health care staff members to ensure productivity and reduce risk.

Personal qualifications: strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, can work under pressure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelors (BSN) in Nursing, masters degree preferred. Licensed/Registered to practice nursing in State of Arkansas.

Experience:
3 years in a Health care related field. One year experience in management, quality assurance work, patient placement and/ or case management, diagnosis coding and familiarity with national data base preferred. Excellent critical thinking skills and a strong background in process management also preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Tasks require hand/eye coordination, ability to see, hear, smell and speak. Physical activities may include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, sitting, stooping, use of fingers and repetitive movements. May be required to lift weight up to 50 lbs. and push/pull 100-150 lbs. Could be exposed to inside/outside environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens and body fluids, chemical and radiological hazards.

Leadership Expectations:
Demonstrate strong communication skill, both oral and written. Demonstrate interpersonal and organizational skills. Must possess strong computer skills and be skilled in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to work independently without close supervision; must have problem solving skills and be self-motivated.

Patients, Physicians, Executive Team Leadership, Nursing Leadership, Case Management and all employees.

1. COMMUNICATIONS
A. Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with staff, physicians, ancillary staff and all other members of the Health Care Team.

D. Maintains flow of information to the appropriate audience through numerous channels and opportunities.
E. Communicates outcome measurements and quality indicator results throughout the organization as needed.

2. MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION
A. Collaborates to develop appropriate performance management measures.
B. Utilizes data for measuring and improving quality of service and outcomes
C. Coordinates and provides data and reports in a manner understandable to the requesting audience.
D. Determines when drill-down of data will present useful information to identify areas for potential performance improvement opportunities.
E. Identifies and tracks significant outcomes, performance data and compares current practice to research based literature
F. Facilitates and supports quality improvement projects

3. LEADERSHIP
A. Anticipates challenges and opportunities, addresses issues in an objective manner and responds appropriately to changes in work demands..
B. Role models effective leadership skills through all activities (verbal and written).
C. Sets expectations and deadlines, monitors progress, and intervenes accordingly.

4. CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE
A. Maintains knowledge in areas of practice and management, as appropriate.
B. Participates in educational programs to enhance clinical or management experience.

5. QUALITY MANAGEMENT
A. Monitors and maintains specific reports to cardiology quality dashboards.
B. Interacts positively with staff and other technical/clinical staff to ascertain accuracy and completeness of data submitted into relevant database. Helps maintain data integrity by running queries and analyzing data.
C. Maintains database security system (s) to ensure confidentiality of all data.
D. Manipulates data to provide ad hoc and other unique reports and responds to requests for information from other departments as well as outside agencies.
E. Knowledgeable and remain current on criteria for data collection as set forth by hospital policy, database and professional organizations.
F. Assist in determining external benchmarks to identify best practice.

6. COORDINATION
A. Determines when drill down of data will present useful information to identify areas for potential performance improvement opportunities.
B. Develops a conceptual understanding of all relevant databases and specific data being reported.

Additional requirements for this role include:
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license that allows you to practice in our state
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Specialty certification (ex: CCRN, CNOR, CEN) preferred
  • Additional certification or licensure may be required for some specialty areas
