The Emergency Department at SaintLouis University Hospital provides immediate medical stabilization and treatmentto institute life and limb saving measures to any persons presenting to thisfacility for emergency care. Our Emergency Department is a level 1 traumacenter serving Missouri and Illinois. Our team is committed totreating trauma patients and improving patient outcomes by providingintegrated, specialized care and clinical research.

  • The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professionalpractitioner who assesses manages, directs, and provides nursing careactivities for all patients presenting to the Emergency Department, andcoordinates care planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient /customer driven approach.
  • The ER RN ensures the delivery of and provides qualitynursing care for all patients presenting to the Emergency Department,utilizing established standards of care and the nursing process.
  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessment.
  • Establishes, coordinates and evaluates a plan of carebased on analysis of assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests,procedures, physician orders, protocols and standards of care and otherinformation as relevant.
  • Provides and documents nursing interventions based onassessed patient needs, plan of care, and changes in patient status.
  • Documents and or communicates nursing care and orchanges in patient condition.
  • Provides specialized care to patients at high risk forinjury.
  • Pain Management: Assess patient for presence of pain onadmission and during assessments/reassessments. Incorporatespatient s cultural/spiritual beliefs regarding pain into pain managementplan. Implement pain management techniques. Focus onprevention rather than treatment. Include patient and/or familymembers in developing a pain management plan. Consider other methodsof pain control when developing plan of care: massage, repositioning,immobilization, and music therapy.
  • Abuse Assessment: is aware of abuse recognitioncriteria and incorporates it into assessments. Reports signs ofpossible abuse/neglect to the physician, Risk Management and Social Work.Takes appropriate action to support patient safety when signs of abuse arenoted.
  • Demonstrates accountability for own professionalpractice.
  • Ability to relate to coworkers in a professional andappropriate manner.



  • Graduate of anaccredited School of Nursing required.

  • RN licensure in the State ofMissouri required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of current ED orCritical Care experience preferred.Level 1 or Level 2 Trauma experience preferred.

  • Successful completion ofAdvanced Cardiac Life Support required. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)preferred. Successful completion of Trauma Nurse Core Course and\\orTrauma Nurse Specialist preferred.
