Position Objective:
The role of the Telecommunicator 1 is to learn and perform basic functions of Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) operations for Pennington County.
Essential Functions :
  • Answer emergency calls while following policy and procedure and providing a high level of customer service and professionalism in stressful situations
  • Enter data into the computer-aided dispatch system as it is received for radio dispatch purposes
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, members of various user agencies, organizations, and the public
  • Attend and satisfactorily pass classroom training in basic call taking skills, computer aided dispatch (CAD) operations and general PSAP operations
  • Attend the South Dakota Law Enforcement Training (SD LET) Academy 9-1-1 certification training and obtain certification in National Crime Information Center database system
  • Complete supervised field training in basic call taking skills, CAD and PSAP operations
  • Attend meetings, events and additional training as required
  • Work rotating 8 or 12-hour shifts, 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including days, afternoons, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as assigned to meet operational needs

Experience and/or Education Required:
  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Keyboard/typing minimum 40 wpm and computer experience required
  • One year customer service experience preferred
  • Proven ability to multi-task and a strong desire to serve the community
  • Must be able to read, write and clearly speak English
  • Must successfully pass a specialized skill test, hearing test and drug screening
  • Must be a US Citizen, free of felony conviction and free of a Class 1 misdemeanor conviction for 3 years
  • Must possess or be able to readily obtain a valid South Dakota driver's license within 90 days of moving to South Dakota
Physical Requirements :
  • Must be able to frequently sit, walk, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, push or pull and use manual dexterity needed to operate a computer, telephone and radio
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, answer phone calls, and perform data entry and/or keyboarding for the duration of an 8-hour or 12-hour shift
  • Must be able to accurately and effectively communicate (hear, talk and comprehend) over the phone, radio, in person
  • Must be physically capable of working rotating day and night shifts 24/7, day and night, rotating shifts
Working Environment:
  • Work is performed in a dispatch center while seated in front of multiple computers for the duration of an 8-hour or 12-hour shift where noise and interruptions frequently occur
  • Must be available to work rotating shifts including days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays and overtime hours may be required to meet operational needs
  • Some travel may be required for training
