Systems Development Engineer (Python)
The Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Engineering group in the Core Infrastructure division is responsible for designing, implementing and managing the firm's large scale global physical and virtual server infrastructure. The group is involved in evaluation, certification, integration, and maintenance of numerous products, including hardware, hypervisor, the Linux O/S, system configuration, critical infrastructure services (DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.), load-balancing capabilities, high availability products and virtualization management technologies. Within this group, the Virtualization Platform team is seeking a new team member in our Glasgow office to accelerate the replacement of existing automation components with a solution based on Ansible as well as to integrate a new vendor product to our existing private cloud infrastructure.
We are a key part of our firm's DevOps transformation; delivering Real Time APIs allowing infrastructure-as-code patterns to be deployed, and providing the Back End integrations that transform desired state into actual state of the environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have extensive expertise in developing automation of repetitive infrastructure tasks in a network, compute or Middleware plant.
- Expertise of writing Ansible, Terraform or any other automation modules would be an ideal fit.
- Alternatively, a network or compute engineer who's scripted or automated low-level configuration and wants to progress their career in that direction would fit very well in our team.
The role involves;
- Implementing and replacing automation for configuration management of a large scale global virtualization plant using Python and Ansible
- Extending and integrating APIs to provide infrastructure-on-demand
- Performing and automating lab-based testing as part of new hardware and software certification
- Communicating with internal clients and stakeholders to identify new business requirements and design well architected solutions that meet their needs
Skills required:
Expertise automating repetitive tasks related to installation, configuration or management of infrastructure using Python
Comfort working in a technology infrastructure team with highly technical colleagues and customers
Strong technical fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, Linux etc)
Expertise with distributed web applications and knowledge of their underlying infrastructure
Understanding of software version control, deployment & build tools and SDLC practices
Skills desired:
Expertise with other programming languages
Knowledge of software testing methodologies
Expertise with VMWare's suite of products
Knowledge of virtualized and containerized infrastructure
