SF Group has engaged with a key client and a world leader in vehicle engineering. My client design, engineer, procure and build a range of market leading vehicles to meet current and future client needs globally. Turnover has more than doubled over the past few years and is now entering the next exciting phase of ambitious growth plans. As part of this, my client is looking to recruit a Lead Engineer (HVAC & Powertrain Cooling)

Overall Purpose

Lead engineering activities to design, develop, verify and maintain vehicle and system designs to meet or exceed customer expectations and business requirements.

The purpose of the Lead Engineer HVAC & Powertrain Cooling role is to manage and develop the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems as well as Powertrain Cooling (engine cooling, charge air cooling, oil cooling and all required ancillaries systems cooling and/or heating); to design concepts, elaborate system design Technical Specifications, to deliver validated products into production.

Main responsibilities

Functional Scope:

HVAC & Powertrain cooling Systems include: Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Powertrain cooling (fossil fuel engine cooling, charge air cooling, oil cooling and all required ancillaries systems cooling and/or heating) as well as Electric powertrain cooling and/or heating (axle drive, batteries, etc.). The function tasks include (but not limited to): design, component engineering and product delivery.

The function will work in conjunction with Chassis systems, Body systems, Electrical and Software groups.

The function interfaces with Engineering, Commodity, Manufacturing, Quality and Logistic.


Validate and ensure consistency of sub-system commodity plans across all programmes.

Ensuring projects are delivered on time.

Record and manage engineering risks and mitigating actions, seeking assistance and guidance where required. Escalate critical risks to the relevant owning Technical or Product Principal Engineer.

Responsible for the assessment, planning and design brief creation for each new project

Responsible for delivering design releases that meet the agreed project targets in areas such as quality, cost, weight and timing

Lead the upfront development and testing of new designs to identify issues and improvements at the earliest opportunity and address them prior to product introduction

Lead the support of New Product Introduction at UK and international build sites and manage build issues through to closure


Ensure common system designs, interfaces and principles are applied consistently across all systems, platforms and territories. Promote the re-use of parts and modular design philosophies. Contribute to process and toolchain improvements to benefit the business

Knowledge & Methodology:

Be responsible for HVAC & Powertrain Cooling systems.

Where applicable, work to improve the business processes, systems and standards to ensure efficient, predictable and repeatable outcomes.

Supporting New Unique Different Difficult (NUDD), Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and Design Verification Plan (DVP)

Work in accordance with the Engineering Product Development process and demonstrate compliance with the deliverables through design records and documentation

Lead the definition of and compliance with relevant internal and international standards, best practice and legislation In particular responsible for ensuring that design guides, certification requirements and vehicle compliance are defined and fulfilled

Implementing product and process improvements in line with performance targets.

Work in accordance with the Systems Engineering process and lead the innovative development, management and integration of systems across platforms and projects. Ensuring all requirements and specifications are defined, approved and achieved through sign-off

Interface directly with internal and external customers on technical issues and requirements. Ensuring high customer satisfaction through safe, reliable and fit for purpose designs

Prepare and present technical documentation and papers for review and communication with key stakeholders

Act as the key contact for arranging and co-ordinating activities with internal and external design partners or suppliers to achieve quality, cost and delivery targets for each project

FMEA & Problem solving:

Responsible for design requirements capture, planning and execution of DFMEAs and design reviews and any subsequent actions through to completion and sign-off

Ensure comprehensive and robust use of DFMEA to raise, track and resolve engineering concerns.

Part of the PFMEA team for all HVAC and Powertrain cooling components.

Guide the T&D Engineers throughout the development and testing phases to ensure that each project milestone is successfully approved with appropriate documentation.

Support component and/or system sign off.

Change Management:

Validate component and/or system changes.

Providing technical support for RQI and value added value engineering (VA / VE).

People management:

Lead teams of on-shore and off-shore engineers and design partners on one or more projects to define, deliver and verify design requirements with sign-off through DFMEA, design review and supplier approval processes

Managing a team of Engineers to ensure deliverables support project requirements.

Working cross-functionally with other Lead Engineers, Technical Principal Engineers and Product Principle Engineers.

Actively contributing towards the health and safety culture of the business.


HVAC experience desirable – preferably in automotive sector

Experience in similar Engineering lead role required

Automotive experience preferable

Engineering degree preferred

Computer Aided Engineering software experience (such as Solidedge) beneficial, Simulation software (Kuli, GD Suite) preferred

Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis experience preferable
