Job Description

Working as part of a multidisciplinary agile team, you’ll be working together with other disciplines such as: user research, content design, data science and service designers to deliver word-class, end-to-end, user-centred public services.

Day-to-day, your role will be to design and/or create new, or improve existing, services across all stages of the digital life cycle (Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live). You’ll deliver good quality code and ensure it is in line with your project goals and delivery cycles.

You’ll help deliver a first-class customer experience across our digital channels, helping our customers complete their transactions through effective use of code, design and functionality. Your role will also include research and analysis, problem solving, sketching, wireframing, prototyping and visual design.

Duties and responsibilities

Use a variety of insight and analysis to understand user needs and define user stories to add to the product backlog. Create or interpret user stories to develop web-based PHP applications and interfaces, in a timely and scalable way.

Use RESTful web services to develop products that meet a variety of needs, taking responsibility for the quality of code you produce.

You will be responsible for the company's existing WordPress websites and digital products to ensure that they are secure, and work across all modern devices.

Your digital products and websites will maintain high accessibility standards, ensuring - through testing and feedback - that assisted digital customers can complete transactions.


A good understanding of software design principles

A practical knowledge of PHP

A good understanding of web security

An awareness of technologies used for web applications, eg databases, backups, operating systems


Able to work quickly in an agile environment

Can use version control systems/mechanisms to support Agile systems working practices

Put forward the case for change with a product manager or service equivalent

Able to develop applications in PHP

Good front-end coding skills (HTML5, CSS3 and JS)


Proven experience in front-end and/or back-end development

Salary: £7.70 to £8.21 /hour
