The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Inspire People are partnering together to bring you an exciting opportunity to join as the Head of the Product profession at DBT, to support all product managers in the organisation with responsibility for continuing to build and develop the professional community. You'll have expert product management skills, but more importantly you'll be confident in coaching others in developing their own skills. £59,130 to £87,050 (including allowances) plus excellent Civil Service benefits. Salary is dependent on location and technical skills as assessed at interview. Flexible, hybrid working from London, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham, Salford (may require occasional travel to other DBT offices).
DBT's Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) team develops and operates tools, services, and platforms such as great.gov.uk that enable the UK government to provide world leading support to businesses in the UK and overseas.

Head of Product Overview:
As Head of the Product Profession at DBT, you'll support all product managers in the organisation, with responsibility for continuing to build and develop the professional community. You'll have expert product management skills, but more importantly you'll be confident in coaching others in developing their own skills. You will build and maintain a culture of sharing and learning amongst product managers, with the ambition of making DBT a great place to build a product management career.
You'll have the support of the DDaT Senior Management Team, including the Chief Product and Delivery Officer, as well as Lead Product Managers, Lead Delivery Managers and the Head of Delivery, in developing and implementing your Product profession strategy. You'll work closely with other communities and senior leadership to represent the interests of the community and support the development of DBT as an organisation.
Responsibilities for the Head of Product:
- Coach others to increase professionalism
- Work with other communities and organization management to represent community interests
- Oversee every member of the community, their role, their assignments, development, pay and performance
- Manage hiring, development, moves and exits from the community, covering civil servants and contractors
- Line manage senior and lead product managers
Essential Skills and Experience for the Head of Product:
- You can show knowledge of the wider digital economy and advances in technology, understand Agile working at an organisational level and create the environment for success. You can initiate and support working with other digital, data and technology (DDaT) roles, job families and professions.
- You can successfully lead teams through the full product life cycle and identify which tools and techniques should be used at each stage. You can coach others, contribute to the assessment of other teams providing guidance and support as they move through stages of the product life cycle.
- You can anticipate problems and defend against them at the right time. You can understand how the problem fits into the larger picture, articulate the problem and help others to do it.
- You can develop a long-term vision and objectives taking a discerning and disciplined approach to focusing on what is important and most relevant. You can develop the capability of others.
- You can give direction on which tools or methods to use, bringing insight and expertise in how user needs have changed over time to ensure they're met by the business. You can apply strategic thinking to provide the best service for the end user.
- You can influence, challenge and coach. You can anticipate how constraints might change and know where to challenge or remove constraints.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- You can coach and lead teams in Agile and Lean practices, determining the right approach for the team to take and evaluating this through the life of a project.
- You know how to design operational processes for the running and maintenance of products or services throughout their product life cycle.
- You have experience building professional communities and communities of practice.
- You have experience assessing services developed against external standards.
