Machine Operator/Diesel Tech BASIC FUNCTION: This position is responsible for operating and maintaining railroad track equipment by keeping them in a safe and proper working condition. This position prioritizes work for repairing of equipment, parts usage and selection. Responsible for monitoring equipment logbooks to insure proper maintenance is being performed and all necessary repairs are being made. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports To: Mobile Foreman and Roadmaster Supervises: No direct reports ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Travels extensively in the performance of job duties. Operates and maintain railroad track equipment by keeping them in a safe and proper working condition. Prepares, conducts, and records maintenance inspection of equipment. Performs maintenance and running repairs on track equipment. Schedule light overhauls on equipment. Ensures compliance of legal and regulatory issues affecting track equipment. Assists in setting schedules of procedures and maintenance tasks as required to maintain equipment in prescribed condition. Maintains proper records, time rolls, complete material documents and work train reports. Unloads or assists in unloading of ballast and unloading and distribution of track material. Follows company and government safety procedures, be alert, use common sense, take necessary precautions (e.g., wearing/using protective clothes and equipment), and maintain an overall level of safety awareness when operating in work environment. Must be qualified under Track Warrant Control, On-Track Worker Safety Rules, General Code of Operating Rules, Timetable, Safety Rules and Bridge Workers Safety within 60 days of hire. Responsible for performing duties and working hours as scheduled, including overtime evenings, weekends, holidays as necessary. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education, Licenses/Certifications and Work Experience High school graduate or equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a current valid driver's license, be insurable under IAIS's commercial auto policy throughout IAIS employment and be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) upon request. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirement Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and request clarification if needed and good interpersonal skills.Ability read, understand, and abide by the General Code of Operating Rules. Must be able to abide by Federal Railroad Administration and other regulations as required by IAIS and the federal, state and local government.Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, management, vendors, and contractors.Making effective decisions when in unfamiliar locations or when responding to changes, interruptions, and obstructions in work process.Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, management, and customers (internal and external). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position involves performing heavy work (frequent (34-66%), lifting up to 100 pounds; frequent or constant (67% - 100%) lifting/carrying of up to 50 pounds. Eye-hand coordination as well as ability to grasp. Able to operate common and specialized hand tools in performing assigned tasks. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; walking about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for longer distances; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or moving about on uneven and/or slippery ground or equipment. Must possess at least 20/40 in each eye with or without corrective lenses. An average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels at 500 HZ 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ, aided or unaided. Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors displayed by signals, signs, etc. May be stressful at times due to interruptions and multiple job duties. WORKING CONDITIONS: The location of work performed (out-of-doors) and the tools and material used in the surrounding workplace, expose the incumbent to the following conditions on a regular basis; Weather, noise (from air compressors and other noisy equipment), vibrations (from air hammers and other power equipment), dust, pollen (seasonal exposure to ragweed and other vegetation). The job requires the individual to follow standard safety procedures, be alert, and take necessary precautions (e.g., wearing/using protective clothes and equipment) to avoid possible injuries or health problems that may result from: walking on irregular ground;exposure to irritants/chemicals;working around moving equipment and other types of equipment;working at heights and elevations.exposure to extreme cold and heat for periods of more than one hour.subject to noise; causes worker to shout in order to be heard.subject to atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or the skin; fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
