POSITION: Analytical Chemist (100% Academic Staff) Hayes Hill title: Assistant Researcher The Assistant Researcher is a mid-level title that is expected to show higher levels of independence and provide technical expertise in a research or scientific project. A staff member in this position has developed extensive knowledge in broad areas of research as well as in specific applications to particular project areas. Has demonstrated sustained superior performance; shows potential for peer recognition of contributions to research in area of expertise. Generates ideas for research activities; designs methodologies for research project collaborations with principal investigators. DUTIES: Collaborate with Lake Superior Research Institute staff on a variety of projects. Duties would include sample collection, sample preparation, analysis method development, sample analysis using various analytical techniques and instrumentation, maintaining thorough records, contributing to the preparation of standard operating procedures and reports, and supervision of junior research staff. Participating in project proposal development and planning will be required as well as keeping abreast of all pertinent literature and methodology in the subject area of investigation and being responsible for conducting preliminary research design, which includes the selection of appropriate methods, instrumentation, and/or equipment. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE: BS in Chemistry with at least six years or MS in Chemistry with a minimum of three years analytical chemistry research experience obtained after receiving the degree. Extensive hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of analytical instrumentation including but not limited to: total organic carbon analyzer, UV-Vis spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, ion chromatography, gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy is a necessity. DESIRED QUALICATIONS INCLUDE: The ability to work both independently and with other team members and to meet project deadlines is required.Experience setting up new instrumentation or laboratory space.Experience with appropriate QA/QC requirements for successful analysisExperience in laboratory management (i.e. ordering equipment and chemicals, management of chemical waste, disposal of hazardous waste).Experience managing or having an understanding of laboratory budgetsExperience drafting SOPs and QAPPs.Experience with technical audits and responsibility for quality control.Experience developing grant proposals, contracts, and/or project-related scopes of work.
