Definition To coordinate, plan, organize and supervise the operation of the farm program within the Sheriff's Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED General direction is provided by a Sheriff's Lieutenant or other higher level management staff. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of Farm Crew Leaders and farm inmate workers. Typical Duties DUTIES may include, but are not necessarily limited to: Plan, schedule, and supervise the work of farm inmate workers in planting and harvesting various food and feed crops, and in the feeding and general care of livestock, including beef cattle and hogs; procure a variety of livestock, including beef cattle and hogs; supervise the work of a Farm Crew Leader in overseeing inmates involved in agricultural and livestock activity; oversee the safe operation of equipment and farm implements; supervise the vaccination, castration and butchering of livestock; insure the proper and timely cultivation and irrigation of crops; performs minor repair and maintenance of farm equipment; compile and analyze farm and livestock production data; estimate need of, maintain inventory for, and procure a variety of seed, material, and equipment; oversee and monitor farm expense, and prepare and recommend budget requests for management; maintain farm records; direct, evaluate and discipline assigned Farm Crew Leaders. Employment Standards NECESSARY EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Knowledge of: Cultivation and irrigation methods for feed and vegetable crops; fertilizers and pesticides and their appropriate use and application; appropriate crop rotation and irrigation methods; care of a variety of livestock, including vaccinations, castration, teeth cutting, weaning, and the types of bulls used for breeding; appropriate and safe farm work practices and procedures; farm equipment and machinery; feed and vegetable seed and crops: their varieties, production, growing seasons, and harvesting methods; the storing of harvested food and feed crops, and slaughtered beef, pork and lamb; supervisory methods and techniques; basic bookkeeping, budgeting and recordkeeping. Skill/Ability to: Recognize and identify agricultural pest damage; maintain a variety of records; select high quality livestock based on prices, general health, breed and physical characteristics; compile and analyze livestock and crop production data; make budget projections for the farm program; formulate recommendations for expanding livestock and crop production; operate a variety of farm equipment including tractors, renovators, discs, cultivators, scrapers and related equipment; read and understand technical information such as farm journals, statistical data, stock (cattle) market reports, and health care manuals for livestock; plan, assign and supervise the work of others; effectively deal with a variety of persons under varying circumstances. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Experience: Five years experience in general agriculture operations including growing vegetable crops, animal husbandry, and operating farm tractors and implements, two years of which should include farm management.
