Basic Function: Interpreting the spoken word into the language of signs at a fluent rate using ASL and ASL in English Word Order. Interpreting signed concepts into the language of English at a fluent rate using spoken mode. As a deafblind intervener, may also use touch cues, object cures, assistive technology, and other modes of communication. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the student services department. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. Essential Functions: Participate as part of the IEP instructional teamAttend staffing meetings and IEP meetings when appropriate to address communication needs and classroom observations of specific deafor blind student(s)Report concerns to the appropriate individualBecome proficient in deaf and blind student(s)' individual communication methods/strategiesResponsible for interpreting any information presented in a classroom/building situation, including lectures, announcements, discussions, assembliesInterpret using the district's communication policy as a guide and at all times, as delineated by student's IEPVoice interpret for deaf and blind student(s)Arrive at class on time and remain in instructional setting with the deaf or blind student(s), even during tests or independent work, until the class is over or scheduled time endsAccompany and support deaf or blind student(s) during community-based instruction and leisure activities during the school dayInterpret for school functions outside of the classroom during regularly scheduled school hours(Exceptions: DHS referrals and interviews)Provide personal care support (may include toileting, feeding support) to deaf or blind student(s), as neededConfer and plan with classroom teachers and teachers of the D/HH in order to be prepared for interpreting and supporting deaf or blind student(s)Under the direction of a teacher, monitor the supplies and equipment for deaf or blind student(s)Assist teacher in the preparation of instructional and supplementary materials for deaf or blind student(s)Participate in district sponsored PD opportunitiesServe as a liaison to promote good public relations between deaf or blind student(s) in the program, hearing peers, staff, and faculty membersReport to the lead interpreter/coordinator or the D/HH classroom when interpreting is not needed due to absences in order to be reassigned where neededTutor under the direction of the teacher Additional Essential Functions (for every DMPS position): Attend work on a prompt and regularbasis.Maintainconfidentiality.Maintainsatisfactoryandharmoniousworkingrelationshipswiththepublic,students,andotheremployees.Assist with other duties as may beassigned. Required: Licensed as an interpreter Completion of two year (or more) interpreter training program and/or intensive & extensive experience involving extensive contact with the deaf and hard of hearing community Comfortable working in close physical proximity to students while frequently using touch to communicate with and instruct students who are primarily tactile learners Successful experience or competency working in a culturally diverse educational environment Desired: Knowledge of Nonlinear (Spatial) and Linear (Word Order) ASL Knowledge of DMPS District's Communication Policy Knowledge of deaf and blind communication facilitation strategies Experience working with students with challenging behaviors Additionally Required (for every DMPS position): Competency working in a culturally diverse environment, or the willingness to acquire these skills.
