In partnership and close collaboration with the medical directors of the Level 1 children's surgery program, hospital and surgical administration, oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of the children's surgical program. Organizes services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to providing care to children with surgical needs. Assumes day-to-day responsibility for process and performance improvement activities related to nursing and ancillary personnel, and assists medical directors in carrying out the same functions for physicians. The primary areas of responsibility include educational, clinical, research, administrative and outreach activities of the children's surgical program. Manages the financial and budgetary operations for the program. Represents the program at the local, regional and state levels. Develops, monitors and revises functional processes. Provides input into the development and revision of organizational structure for function. Approves personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc. Ensures the timely completion of performance appraisals. Develops current to intermediate goals and measures for areas of responsibility. Measures and assesses performance. As requested, assists in long range goal development. Assists in development of and monitors budget. Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, Joint Commission requirements and DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.
1. Clinical: Coordinates management across the continuum of clinical activities of children's surgical care, which includes planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring the care of inpatients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.
2. Educational: Provides intra-facility and regional professional staff development, participates in case reviews, implements practice guidelines and directs community education programs.
3. Performance Improvement: Monitors clinical processes and outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided. Develops quality filters, audits and case reviews. Identifies trends and sentinel events, and helps to outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality.
4. Administration: Manages the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the children's surgery program. Serves as a liaison to administration. Represents the children's surgery program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal care management.
5. Supervision of data collection: Supervises collection, coding, and development of processes for validation and analysis of data. Designs and oversees the data collection to facilitate performance improvement activities, trend reports, and research while protecting confidentiality.
6. Consulting and liaison: Stabilizes the complex network of many disciplines that work in concert to provide high quality children's surgical care. Serves as an internal resource for staff in all departments, and acts as an extended liaison for other system entities.
7. Research: Participates in research projects, analysis and distribution of findings. Facilitates protocol design for accurate data collection, feedback and analysis and understands the requirement of research oversight.
8. Community and national engagement in children's surgical care systems: Participates in the development of children's surgical care systems at the community, state and/or national levels. .
9. Remains current with local, statewide and national trends and issues regarding children's surgical care.
10. In coordination with administration, prepares budgets for the children's surgery program. Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN). MSN or NP preferred.
2. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
3. Three years of progressively more responsible leadership experience.
4. Five years of nursing experience. Surgical/Operating Room nursing or other relevant clinical background highly desirable.
5. BLS certified.

5. Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities to develop and evaluate effectiveness of surgical (Pre-operative, Intraoperative and Post operative) nursing care plans.
6. Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching, teaching and counseling skills, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others and to forge alliances and garner support.
7. Analytical ability to create solutions to difficult administrative, technical or human situations, to anticipate and resolve a broad range of issues and concerns on multiple, sometimes unrelated topics, to determine the need for process development and refinement, to independently evaluate situations and outline ramifications of multiple solutions or options, to recommend goals for a function/area and understand when intervention in current work processes must occur to ensure successful delivery of service.
