We are seeking a Jr. Mechanical Engineer to support our Navy DoD customer in research, development, testing, evaluation, and engineering analysis at our Colorado Springs, CO office.

For more than 60 years, Peraton has supported our Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) customer by performing research, development, analysis, modeling and simulation, and testing to assess weapon system performance and qualify weapon systems for normal and hostile environments. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will provide support in the areas of programmatic and systems engineering, technical engineering, scientific analysis, and operational systems support for SSP's strategic reentry systems. We utilize both COTS and in-house developed software to deliver analysis results and software models of reentry system and weapons effects to Navy SSP or their designee.

What you will do:

You will be responsible for the following:
  • Perform engineering analysis and computational modeling to evaluate the aerodynamic performance, thermal response, and structural response of complex three-dimensional systems
  • Conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and thermal calculations to support trajectory analysis and assess weapon system performance subject to various environments
  • Perform finite element analyses (FEA) on complex structures
  • Develop grid models for CFD calculations and FEA from engineering CAD models
  • Perform a wide range of tasks including calculations of hypersonic fluid flow, thermal response of materials, system level structural response, component level response, linear elastic, viscoelastic, and plastic materials modeling, code validation studies, system tradeoff studies, and mechanical testing
  • Use engineering simulation software including in-house trajectory simulation codes, hydrodynamic analysis tools and CFD solvers, FEA solvers, and commercial CAD tools (i.e., PATRAN, ABAQUS, CREO, Pointwise, GASP, etc.).
You will support a team in the completion of hostile and normal environment assessments of reentry systems using in- house and industry leading fluid/thermal solvers:
  • Perform non-linear structural, aerodynamic and thermal response calculations for reentry systems resulting from aerodynamic heating and high pressure loading
  • Develop grids and boundary conditions to solve hypersonic fluids problems
  • Develop grids and load conditions to solve finite element structural analysis
  • Model reentry system flight dynamics and six degree of freedom trajectories
  • Use, develop and modernize in-house codes to simulate both test and tactical scenarios
  • Develop ablative material models for thermal protection systems
  • Develop unique programs to accurately complete simulations and to interpret results
  • Maintain Configuration Management of software programs using CMMI process
  • Perform Verification & Validation of simulation results
You will correlate simulation results with component through system-level qualification tests:
  • Define system level test parameters in support of the National Laboratories
  • Develop technical reports capturing assumptions, inputs, outputs, and assessments
  • Peer review planned test plans and test reports
  • Assist in the definition of test environments
  • Perform pre-test and post-test simulations to update computer models
  • Develop Technical Documentation and Briefings
  • Develop Power Point presentations
  • Interface directly with the customer
  • Travel for meetings and customer interactions

You would be a great fit if you have:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Education or experience performing Finite Element Modeling (FEM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Thermal Analysis
  • Education or experience developing and implementing algorithms to solve engineering problems with the aid of computer simulation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance. In order to obtain a clearance, you need to be a U.S. Citizen and show proof of citizenship.
It would be even better if you have:
  • Experience with any of the following technologies: Matlab, Fortran, Python, Pointwise, GASP, Tecplot, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to learn additional coding/scripting languages and methods
  • Ability to create unique code-to-code interfaces along with post processing routines for model response analyses
  • Experience working within a team of motivated and highly-skilled engineers and scientists
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and manage detailed tasks within customer driven timelines
  • Ability to work independently or on a team
